Living without a car can be practical in Cambridge. Many daily trips can be made on foot, by bike or by public transport. Moving to a new home is different. Boxes, furniture and household equipment require a clear transport plan.

You also need to think about building access and the items you will carry yourself. Preparing these details early can keep a moving day organised.

Why a Car-Free Move Needs a Different Plan

Start by deciding what will travel in the moving vehicle and what will stay with you. Documents, medications and small electronics are usually easier to keep nearby.

Do not plan to carry several heavy bags across the city. Pack personal essentials into one backpack or small suitcase. Everything else can be prepared for transport.

Check both properties before the move. Look at entrances, stairs and elevators. Measure large furniture and narrow doors.

It also helps to know how you will travel to the new home once loading begins. Plan this route separately from the route used for your belongings.

Organise Transportation and Building Access

Confirm the Cambridge moving service date with both properties. Apartment buildings may have specific hours for moves. An elevator or loading area may also need to be reserved.

When arranging a Cambridge moving service, explain the access conditions at each address. Whatever details you have about stairs, elevators, narrow doorways, large furniture, etc., are helpful when creating a move schedule.

Understand the loading and unloading restrictions for the vehicles used on move day. If there is not a lot of access to the street, the moving vehicle may have to park a long distance from the loading and unloading location.

Try to schedule furniture deliveries on different days from your other move day activities.

What to Prepare Before Moving Day

Finish the main packing before the final evening. Keep only everyday essentials outside the boxes.

A simple checklist can help:

  • Confirm access to both buildings.
  • Label every box by room.
  • Measure large furniture and entrances.
  • Charge your phone and other devices.
  • Keep keys and documents nearby.
  • Prepare water and a few snacks.
  • Pack basic toiletries separately.
  • Keep important medications with you.
  • Plan your own route to the new property.

Check every closet and cabinet before leaving. Small belongings are easy to forget when the room is filled with packed boxes.

Keep Personal Essentials With You

Prepare a bag for the move. It should contain items you may need or that may be difficult to replace on your moving day.

This bag should contain the items you listed as well as your wallet, ID and keys. Add your phone charger, basic toiletries and any medication you regularly use. A bottle of water and a small snack can also be useful during a long moving day.

Important documents and items should not be placed in household boxes. You may need to sort through many boxes to locate one document. Keep paperwork in a separate folder so it stays organised and easy to reach.

You should be able to comfortably carry your bag through Cambridge, so keep the bag light. Take only the essentials you expect to use before your other belongings are unpacked.

Settle Into Your New Cambridge Neighbourhood

When you move to a new area, it is a good idea to locate the services you use the most. This includes stores, pharmacies, and public transit. Additionally, you should identify secure storage for your bike if you use one.

Depending on your mode of transport, you may need to plan in advance how you will gain access to your new building. You should plan how you will transport bulky, heavy and large items. You may want to leave non-essential items until you move again.
