Talkin’ Trucks: New Trucks MPG not a focus? Swede to Michigan!

Share

In this week’s episode, Publisher Tim Esterdahl is joined by David Boyd from All Terrain Nation to discuss why new trucks MPG isn’t a big focus, Esterdahl’s Swede to Michigan project as well as a variety of other topics.

Managing Editor Jill Ciminillo was on assignment this week and couldn’t join in.

The Livestream kicks off with Esterdahl discussing the dangers of eating too much salt as a Public Service Announcement due to vertigo he has experienced in recent days.

Then, things got back on track with Esterdahl unveiling his dream to drive his 1962 Chevy C-10 aka “Swede” during the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise. The plan is to finish the new powertrain build and tow Swede with the new 2023 Chevy Silverado he bought for the channel. He is currently looking for sponsors and here are the details for sponsors.

After this announcement, there was some back and forth on what the new Ford Super Duty 6.8-liter gas engine is all about with Esterdahl heading over to the build and price tool on Ford.com to see that base engine is only available on the lowest XL trim making it likely just a fleet engine option detuned with less horsepower and torque output.

Finally, a discussion on how automakers don’t seem to care about MPG goes back and forth throughout the Livestream with no real conclusion other than people seem to like to talk about MPG, but when it comes to buying a new truck they don’t put MPG always at the top of their list. This ties into the recent website posts about the 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon both getting worse fuel economy than prior generation models.

Esterdahl and Ciminillo do weekly livestreams on YouTube, which are projected out to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. In 2023, they are switching to a Monday/Tuesday schedule at 8 p.m. EST, so be sure to subscribe to the YouTube channel and follow them on social media for the upcoming live episode timing and topics. I have not watched the video yet, however MPG and rear seat room are at the top of my list. I drive 22-23K a year so need better MPG. Last go around I bought a small SUV because I needed better MPG. I am hopeful that the new Tacoma will have a hybrid that gets 30 MPG. If not, I will try one last time for a Maverick Hybrid…..from there we will see…..
