The idea of armored SUVs is nothing new, with well-heeled buyers having a literal sea of models to choose from. But what if you’re a buyer that wants to have world-class armor protection, but don’t want to upgrade to a full-size Cadillac Escalade to do it? If so, the folks at AddArmor have the answer with their all new armored XT6 which the company claims is “the world’s safest crossover utility vehicle.”
Before we get into what makes the AddArmor XT6 so special, we might as well tell you it is still not cheap, with a base armored XT6 starting at $86,000 which is a $28,000 premium over a standard XT6. That figure might seem steep, but to customers that need such a thing, there is no price higher than having peace of mind.
AddArmor CEO and former Special Operations veteran Pete Blaber further highlighted this stating: “The idea behind adding armor is to create a ‘Mobile Safe-Room’ that protects the passengers of the vehicle from would-be attackers while also providing ‘peace of mind’ that cannot be attained in an unarmored vehicle.”
But what makes this XT6 build so special? It all starts at the windows, with AddArmor engineers replacing the stock glass with bullet resistant and shatter proof glass panels. AddArmor then installs custom fitted ballistic panels which are made out of ultra light synthetic laminate materials.
This novel material is the best of both worlds, with the panels not only being 60% lighter than traditional ballistic steel but also 10% stronger as well. According to AddArmor, this material helps provide the protection that buyers crave, but without adding too much excess weight to the vehicle.
This build also comes equipped with run-flat tires which allows the SUV to be still driven at up to 50 mph if they get punctured. Otherwise, the XT6 retains its stock styling cues, which allows it to blend in and not draw too much attention to hostile groups.
Performance for the AddArmor XT6 comes from the stock 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque and is mated to the stock nine speed automatic. Other goodies include a whole suite of safety and drive assistance systems, as well as night vision to help spot potential trouble when the sun goes down.
This high degree of luxury is very impressive, and it allows occupants to still stretch out and relax on long journeys. Buyers interested can order one now from AddArmor, with the first units expected to be completed shortly after.
