In a surprise announcement released earlier today via a teaser video posted on Ram Truck’s official Facebook page, the brand revealed that the Raptor slaying 2021 Ram TRX is indeed on the way, with the off-road performance truck expected to be unveiled in late summer.
The video itself does not show much, with the truck being obscured by a thick plume of dirt. However, the sound of a powerful V8 can be heard briefly, and while the brand has so far not confirmed whether the 6.2 liter supercharged Hellcat V8 is lurking under the hood. Chances are good that it is indeed the powerplant of choice for the Ram TRX, especially since it would allow Ram to make a very potent statement against the Ford F-150 Raptor, and be the apex predator in the off-road jungle. We suspect that the Ram TRX’s version of the engine would be de-tuned slightly to help eliminate excess stress on some of the off-road focused hardware that would be bolted to the truck.
On that note, we suspect the Ram TRX will arrive with a standard part time two speed four wheel drive system, but considering that Ram is clearly focusing on high speed desert running, we hope the TRX will feature an electronic rear differential that can be engaged in two wheel drive too. A widened track would also be part of the package along with an electronically adjustable suspension that would also come with bundled adjustable steering. It would also be safe to assume that the Ram TRX would only be available with an eight speed automatic, which is another indicator of the 6.2 liter’s presence (it is the transmission of choice for other Hellcat powered offerings.)
The 2021 Ram TRX will represent a bold push by FCA into the desert running portion of the off-road segment, with the Jeep Gladiator Mojave being the first Jeep offering to be tailor made from the factory to tackle sandy terrain. When the 2021 Ram TRX eventually makes its appearance in dealerships, the model would finally give the currently unchallenged Ford Raptor some serious competition, and perhaps be everything that the 2016 TRX concept previewed to eager buyers.
