The 2027 Toyota Tundra changes include updated styling, a new Trailhunter package, a standard 14-inch multimedia screen, a built-in drive recorder, Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 and, perhaps most importantly, an available 2.4-kW inverter for i-FORCE MAX trucks.
Yes, Toyota appears to have been listening.
This is more than a routine collection of new colors and minor trim adjustments. Toyota has addressed several of the most requested Tundra improvements, particularly inside the cabin and in the bed. The result should be a more functional truck with better technology, greater trail capability and meaningful improvements for owners who use their Tundra for work, camping and everyday driving.
Full specifications and pricing will arrive in fall 2026, but Toyota has already revealed the major updates.
2027 Toyota Tundra gets updated styling
Toyota has redesigned the front of the 2027 Tundra with a sharper, more purposeful appearance.
The updated design was developed by Toyota Motor North America teams, including CALTY Design Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Toyota says the new front-end treatment uses crisp, square geometry and a stronger vertical orientation to communicate power and capability.
The front end retains the Tundra’s broad stance while incorporating a revised lower bumper, rectangular fog lights and new hexagonal grille patterns that vary by trim. Toyota says the different grille treatments will help distinguish the personalities of its work-oriented, premium and off-road models.
An upgraded grille-mounted LED light bar provides brighter output, while RIGID fog lights and front recovery hooks will be available on select configurations.
The result is recognizably Tundra, but with a cleaner and more modern face.
New Tundra Trailhunter package expands the off-road lineup
Toyota is also introducing a new Trailhunter package based on the SR5 grade.
This factory-built overlanding package includes:
- Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R18 tires
- Old Man Emu upgraded suspension
- Front recovery hooks
- Additional underbody protection
- Multi-Terrain Select
- Crawl Control
- Locking rear differential
- Bronze-colored wheels
- Exclusive Trailhunter badges
Toyota says the SR5-based package is intended to make an adventure-ready Tundra available at a more accessible price point.
That positioning gives buyers another way to build an off-road Tundra without necessarily stepping into one of the lineup’s most expensive trims. It should appeal to owners who want genuine trail hardware, factory integration and an overlanding-ready foundation.
Toyota will continue to offer the TRD Pro, along with SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition and Capstone grades.
Standard 14-inch screen and built-in dash camera
The cabin receives one of the 2027 Tundra’s most important upgrades: Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system.
Every 2027 Tundra will now come standard with a 14-inch screen. The new system uses a more intuitive, smartphone-like interface with customizable widgets and a new “home” button (!). Yes, that includes the kind of straightforward home functionality that makes it easier to move through the system without hunting through menus.
Toyota also says its embedded Voice Assistant will respond more quickly to “Hey Toyota” commands. The system integrates AT&T 5G connectivity, subject to network availability.
The headline feature, however, might be the standard built-in Drive Recorder Dash Cam. This was introduced on the RAV4 and it works seamlessly.
When enabled, the system uses the truck’s exterior cameras to record 20-second clips. Recordings can be initiated manually or triggered automatically by certain events. Depending on the truck’s equipment, the system can use the front and rear cameras or the Panoramic View Monitor cameras.
A properly integrated factory dash camera eliminates the need to mount a separate camera, route power cables around the windshield and manage another application or memory card. This is exactly the type of technology that makes a truck easier to live with.
Digital Key receives expanded functionality
The 2027 Tundra will also offer enhanced Digital Key functionality with an active Remote Connect trial or subscription. Yeah, yeah… it is a feature for those with less gray in their beards, but it is pretty cool, stay with me here.
Owners will be able to manage the Digital Key through the native wallet application on a compatible Apple, Google or Samsung device. That includes locking, unlocking, starting and operating the supported vehicle.
Digital Key access can be shared with as many as five additional drivers, with permissions managed directly through the digital wallet.
Toyota says near-field communication can continue providing vehicle access for a limited time even if the connected device’s battery is depleted. That should make the phone-based key more practical and reduce concerns about being locked out by a dead phone.
Toyota has not yet detailed every Remote Connect or remote-start behavior change in this Tundra announcement. We will update that information once the complete specifications and operating details are available.
A 2.4-kW inverter transforms the i-FORCE MAX
The other major announcement is the availability of a 2.4-kW inverter on Tundra models equipped with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain.
This is a substantial improvement and one that I was very, VERY critical of when the third-generation was announced considering the recent sales success of the Ford Powerboost’s on-board power system.
The inverter can provide electricity for tools, camping equipment and recreational gear. That gives owners another way to use the hybrid system beyond producing additional torque and acceleration.
For contractors, it can provide power for equipment at a job site. For campers, it can run lights, appliances and other gear without requiring a separate portable generator. It can also provide useful emergency power when electricity is unavailable.
A high-output inverter is exactly the kind of feature that makes an electrified truck powertrain more valuable. It turns the truck into a mobile power source and gives buyers a practical reason to select the i-FORCE MAX beyond its performance.
Toyota has not yet specified outlet locations, operating restrictions or whether the inverter can provide its complete output while the truck is parked. Those details are expected with the full 2027 specifications this fall.
Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 becomes standard
Every 2027 Tundra will come with Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 and this is HUGE for those who tow.
The latest version of Toyota’s active safety suite includes updated hardware and detection capabilities. Its listed features include:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Automatic High Beams
- Lane Tracing Assist
- Road Sign Assist
- Proactive Driving Assist
Why towing? It senses and turns off the back-up sensors when you back-up to a trailer. Yeah, holy cow. What a damn god send.
it also means remote start stays running even after you open a door. Another big deal/frustration for Toyota owners.
Gas and hybrid powertrains continue
Toyota confirms the 2027 Tundra will remain available with gas and hybrid powertrains. No surprise there. Sorry V8 hopefuls.
The gas-powered twin-turbocharged V-6 will continue . The available i-FORCE MAX hybrid adds more torque and responsiveness, along with access to the newly announced 2.4-kW inverter.

Yet the available 2.4-kW inverter could be the most consequential improvement. It gives the i-FORCE MAX system another practical purpose and makes the hybrid Tundra considerably more useful at campsites, job sites and anywhere portable power is needed.
