What’s new for 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500

Share

The 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 will see changes for the new model year like a new engine name, exhaust setup and adding a diesel to the ZR2.

For the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500, it sees these minimal changes after an overhaul for the 2023 model year which saw a new interior, a ZR2 model and a new LZ0 3.0-liter Duramax diesel engine.

What’s new for 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500

This year, the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 gets a few new changes including a new name for their 2.7-liter engine which is now found in the 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon.

The highlights are:

  • Silverado’s proven 2.7L High-Output Engine debuts a new name: TurboMax.
  • Silverado ZR2 will be available with the 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine
  • New Active Dual Exhaust coming for the 6.2L V-8 engine
  • Blackout Package debuts for Silverado lineup, Silverado 1500 High Country Midnight Edition newly available

Starting with the new TurboMax name, this is really a marketing play to reset the dialogue/criticism over it being a four-cylinder engine. As Kevin Luchansky, assistant chief engineer for the 2.7-liter turbo engine told me in our exclusive interview, this engine was designed with a turbocharger and there is no real benefit for adding extra cylinders with this setup.

“TurboMax is built like a diesel: it’s durable and packs turbocharged performance to win over both diesel and V-8 customers alike,” said Kevin Luchansky, assistant chief engineer, 2.7L Turbo Engine. “The TurboMax name encapsulates the modern engineering, manufacturing and controls which shuts the door on arguments against turbocharged engines from decades ago.”

GM says this name will cover the entire Silverado lineup as as well as the Chevy Colorado. It produces 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque at 3,000 RPMs. This is a marked improvement over a naturally aspirated engine for horsepower and torque as I detailed with the 2023 Chevy Colorado MPG story.

Next, the most off-road ready GM truck in years, the Silverado ZR2 can now be ordered with the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel. This engine produces 495 pound-feet of torque at just 1,500 RPMs and has shown on paper and in real-life accounts to return mid to high 20 MPG numbers. It will interesting to see how this translates into the ZR2. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this engine so far in our long-term Silverado 1500 test truck.

Also, a new Active Dual Exhaust is available for the 6.2-liter V-8 engine and GM says their engineers have made the exhaust sound “throatier” for different drive modes: Normal, Tow/Haul and Sport.

Finally, there is a Black Appearance Package, available on Silverado Custom, Custom Trail Boss, RST, LT Trail Boss and ZR2, and newly available Silverado High Country Midnight Edition.

Here is a recap of the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500:

2024 Chevy Silverado 1500The bottom line

With the recently refreshed 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500, I wasn’t expecting much for the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 and my expectations matched the reality. I am excited to check out the ZR2 with the Duramax diesel as well as seeing the black appearance package in person. I know the Chevy truck team had to fight internally to get a blacked out badge for the Silverado, and subsequently can’t keep it in stock, and with how cool that badge looks, I expect the whole truck to look that much cooler.

Just thinking out loud again. That damn diesel would be great in a regular cab short bed too! Then again so would an interior that doesn’t date back 10 years. I know, I know. Demand. 👎🏻
