2024 Chevy Silverado HD revealed! Much needed updates + ZR2, High Country

Share

A new 2024 Chevy Silverado HD has been revealed with many important changes including improved towing, off-road capability and technology.

Building off the 2019 model, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD fixes some key misses and jettisons the old interior layout, which caused much criticism among truck buyers and reviewers.

10-speed automatic transmissions for all!

One of the big changes for the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD is making the 10-speed automatic transmission standard for both the 6.6-liter gas as well as 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engines.

Prior to this model year, the 6.6-liter gas engine had an old-school 6-speed automatic transmission while the Duramax Diesel had the 10-speed. Now, both engines will benefit from the extra gears.

Chevy says the gas engine will offer “smaller ‘steps’ between the gears, which enables the 6.6-liter gas engine to hold closer to its peak power for longer periods.”

There is also an improvement in the braking with the better grade braking for the gas engine by using the transmission shifting to slow you down.

One more note on the Duramax Diesel is the power improvement to 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. This is an increase over the prior generation with 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. Chevy also says it improved the low-end torque output by up to 25% thanks to additional engine changes.

New exterior styling

Other changes for the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD include a new front-end design similar to the changes for the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500.

A big improvement owners will notice is to the front lighting. These new headlights feature dual-projector technology with the main and high beam lights are now split into dual functions complete with new animated light sequence “welcomes or bids them farewell from the truck.”

Tow hooks and “CHEVROLET” lettering featured on the hood scoop are now standard.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD will also come in six new exterior colors including: Sterling Gray, Dark Ash, Radiant Red, Auburn Metallic, Lakeshore Blue Metallic (late availability) and Meteorite Metallic (late availability).

The truck lineup will keep the popular Z71 Sport Edition, Z71 Chrome Sport Edition and Midnight Special Edition appearance packages as well as the Alaskan Snow Plow Special Edition.

New wheel and tire options for the Silverado HD include:

  • 20-inch bright chrome wheels available on LTZ
  • 18-inch polished aluminum dually wheel and all-terrain tires optional on 3500HD LTZ and standard on 3500HD High Country
  • 20-inch off-road tires available on Z71 Sport Edition, Midnight Special Edition, Alaskan Snow Plow Special Edition and Z71 Off-Road package.

Wow interior upgrade!

Aside from the exterior changes, the interior sees a massive refresh similar to the redesigned Silverado 1500.

These changes center around the Google-based operating system and 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment system, which is turned slightly to be more towards the driver. Also, a 12.3-inch diagonal configurable driver infotainment screen is new with styling complementing the larger diagonal display.

Another small but necessary change is the addition of second-row air vents and controls.

The big news Chevy truck owners really want to know, however: The column shifter, which is beneficial for towing and snow plow applications, remains.

Adaptive cruise now available + more!

It is hard to believe I’m typing this is for a 2024 model, but the new Silverado HD now comes with adaptive cruise control. Launching the 2019 model without this feature was a head scratcher, and it’s nice to see Chevy address this wide-spread criticism.

Chevy also added or changed:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Trailer is an all-new technology for Silverado HD. It allows the Silverado HD’s available Adaptive Cruise Control to account for additional drag and increased braking distances when towing a trailer.
  • Enhanced Transparent Trailer expands the current Transparent Trailer2 technology by allowing it to work with fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers
  • Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert extends the blind zone area of interest to help enhance safety and situational awareness when trailering
  • GCW Alert warns the driver if the vehicle and trailer weight exceed the vehicle’s Gross Combined Weight Rating

Chevy did keep the 14 unique camera angles it is known for as well as that transparent trailer feature. Now, you can actually see the cameras with the larger infotainment screen.

More towing capacity

When it comes to HD trucks, towing is a big deal, so we’re glad to see the 2024 model gets some improvements here as well.

For the Duramax Diesel 3500 HD models, the max trailering climbs to 36,000 pounds and the 2500 HD Duramax Diesel models have a maximum towing capacity of 22,500 pounds.

The maximum Gross Combined Weight Rating climbs to 26,000 pounds, up 2,000 pounds, for the gas 2500 HD truck.

New Silverado HD ZR2, High Country changes

While Chevy said there is a new Silverado HD ZR2 model coming, we don’t have a lot of details just yet.

For the High Country, however, we know there is a new, exclusive Nightshift Blue interior, which include Jet Black and Umber elements. There are also new metal “High Country” badges on the center console and the same lettering embroidered on the head restraints.

The seats also feature premium fabric piping, while the door panels include fabric piping and trim with authentic open-pore wood. The wood additionally serves as a decorative trim on the upper glovebox. On the exterior, a new High Country exclusive 20-inch bright chrome wheel design is standard.

Other creature comforts include power-adjustable heated-and-ventilated front seats with memory and haptic sensors, acid-etched stainless steel speaker grilles for the standard Bose seven-speaker audio system, rain-sensing wipers and wireless charging.

There will also be a Midnight edition of the 2024 Chevy Silverado High Country available with black accents and black badges as well as standard 20-inch, high-gloss black painted wheels and optional 22-inch wheels.

The truck is going into production in the first half of 2023 at both the Flint Assembly Plant and the Oshawa Assembly plant. Pricing and availability will be detailed closer to launch.

The bottom line

Much-needed improvements to the interior, better transmission and more power/towing capacity are all great things to see for the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD models. Now, what will the competition do? The 2019 Chevy Silverado HD was a good truck until you compared it to the rivals and saw how much nicer the interior was for truck customers.

Will this truck suffer the same fate?
