Recall ordered for up to 419,035 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee L models, due to side airbags that may not deploy properly.
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2023-2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles. A software error in the occupant restraint controller module may cause the delayed deployment of the side air bags during a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 214, “Side Impact Protection.”
Affected VINs should be searchable now at the NHTSA website.
Here is the relevant information from the NHTSA Recall notice:
NHTSA ID Number: 26V328
Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)
Components: AIR BAGS
Potential Number of Units Affected: 419,035
Estimated percentage with defect: 1%
Descriptive Information
Description of defect or noncompliance:
FMVSS 571.214 Side Impact Protection requires Side Air Bag (“SAB”) deployment to satisfy injury criteria with multiple occupant sizes in various crash modes. A faulted door airbag pressure sensor may result in delayed deployment of the SAB in certain types of crashes which may be noncompliant.
Description of the safety risk, including crash, fire, death, injury:
A delayed deployment of the SAB may reduce occupant protection in the event of certain types of crashes, potentially resulting in an increased risk of injury to motor vehicle occupants.
Description of the cause:
None.
Identification of any warning that can occur:
None prior to failure. However, once the fault sets, the airbag light will continuously illuminate in the cluster, and a chime will sound at each ignition cycle.
Chronology
In February 2023, FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Engineering and Supplier Quality became aware of a small number of warranty incidents related to door airbag pressure sensors.
From February 2023, through August 2025, FCA US Engineering and Supplier Quality analyzed returned door airbag pressure sensors through the warranty process.
From August 2023, through September 2023, FCA US Engineering and Manufacturing conducted an enhanced problem-solving exercise to understand all potential failure modes of the door airbag pressure sensor related to the door environment.
In May 2024, FCA US Engineering and Manufacturing modified a door wire harness.
On June 6, 2024, the FCA US Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization opened an investigation into a potential issue related to the suspect vehicles which may experience delayed deployment of the side air bag during certain types of crashes.
From June 2024, through March 2025, FCA US TSRC held regular meetings with FCA US Engineering, Supplier Quality, and Safety Performance to understand all potential failure modes related to door environment affecting airbag pressure sensor performance and analyze incoming data.
In January 2025, FCA US Engineering collected and analyzed field data related to door wire harness routing and door airbag pressure sensor faults.
From January 2025, through July 2025, FCA US Engineering, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality, and Supplier Engineering conducted a second enhanced problem-solving exercise to understand all potential failure modes of the door airbag pressure sensor related to the door environment and software strategy.
From July 2025, through April 2026, FCA US TSRC held regular meetings with FCA US Engineering and Safety Performance to analyze incoming data, understand all potential failure modes, and to determine the suspect population.
On April 22, 2026, FCA US TSRC recognized that a vehicle build issue existed on certain vehicles related to SAB deployment potentially resulting in a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 571.214.
On May 14 2026, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, that a noncompliance to a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard exists in certain vehicles.
