Hooking up a trailer changes what your truck’s dashboard is trying to say. The same amber symbol that meant “top up a tire next week” in July means something more urgent when you are loaded to the hitch on a grade in August. Most of us have learned to read these lights by folklore rather than by manual, and the folklore is mostly wrong.
Here is what the common warnings actually indicate under load, and what deserves a roadside stop versus a look in the driveway.
The tire pressure light is a load problem before it is a leak
TPMS triggers at roughly 25% below the placard pressure. That threshold was chosen for an unloaded vehicle, which is the first thing worth knowing when you are towing.
Two things change when you add a trailer. Rear tires carry substantially more load, so the pressure they need rises, while the placard number in the door jamb stays the same. And temperature swings move pressure about 1 PSI per 10 degrees Fahrenheit, which means a truck that reads fine at dawn can light up by mid-morning without losing any air at all.
If the light comes on during a tow, pull over and check pressures cold when you can. A slow leak and a cold-morning false alarm feel identical from the driver’s seat and are not the same problem.
The check engine light means more than one thing
This is the warning that generates the most bad advice, largely because it covers hundreds of distinct fault codes with a single amber symbol. The distinction that actually matters is steady versus flashing.
A steady light means a fault is stored. The truck has noticed something outside spec and logged it. You can usually finish the drive.
A flashing light means an active misfire severe enough to dump unburned fuel into the exhaust. That is the one that destroys a catalytic converter in minutes rather than months, and it is worth stopping for. Under tow, with higher exhaust temperatures and sustained load, the margin is smaller than it would be running empty.
The causes range from a loose fuel cap to a failing sensor, and there is a reasonable breakdown of what a check engine light actually means if you want to understand the code categories before you spend money at a shop.
A $30 scanner ends most of the guessing
Every truck sold in the US since 1996 has an OBD2 port, usually under the driver’s side dash. A basic reader will pull the stored code and turn a vague amber light into a specific string like P0420 or P0301. That is the difference between “something is wrong” and “cylinder one is misfiring.”
Keep one in the glovebox during towing season. Reading the code yourself does not fix anything, but it tells you whether you are dealing with an evaporative emissions fault that can wait or a misfire that cannot.
Brake and transmission temperature warnings deserve immediate respect
These two do not have the ambiguity of the check engine light. A transmission temperature warning on a grade means the fluid is past its designed operating range, and continuing costs you the transmission. Pull over, put it in park, and let it idle rather than shutting down immediately so the cooler keeps circulating.
Brake warnings under load are similarly literal. Trailer brakes that are out of adjustment put the entire stopping job on the truck, and the warning is telling you that is happening.
Before the season starts, check for open recalls
This one costs nothing and almost nobody does it. Manufacturers issue recalls on towing components fairly regularly, and an open recall is repaired free of charge regardless of vehicle age or mileage.
You can check any vehicle against the federal database using its VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup. It takes about thirty seconds and the VIN is visible through the windshield on the driver’s side.
The practical version
Read the light before you react to it. A steady check engine light on a loaded truck is worth a scanner and a decision. A flashing one is worth a shoulder. A TPMS warning in changing weather is worth a gauge rather than a tow truck. And a transmission temperature warning is worth stopping for, every time.
The dashboard is not being dramatic. It is just limited to about a dozen symbols to describe several hundred conditions, and the gap between those two numbers is where most expensive mistakes happen.
