A Ram 1500 owner review usually comes after 10,000, 50,000 or perhaps 100,000 miles. Justin Wheeler has a much longer story to tell. His 2019 Ram 1500 Limited has traveled approximately 323,000 miles and accumulated more than 9,200 engine hours.

The truck did not spend those miles cruising gently between a garage and an office. Wheeler says it was driven nearly every day, used for towing, left outdoors and worked hard. That makes what remained original remarkable. It also makes the major Hemi failure that finally parked the truck worth examining.

Ram 1500 Owner Review Starts with 323,000 Hard Miles

Wheeler bought the fifth-generation Ram 1500 Limited new in August 2019. Although his video title rounds the mileage to 325,000, the truck had approximately 323,000 miles when he recorded the update.

The computer showed 9,235 engine hours, including 2,435 idle hours. That averages about 35 miles for every engine hour, reflecting a combination of highway travel, towing and substantial time spent idling.

The body and cabin tell the story of a working truck. The grille and painted bumper have rock chips, the driver’s seat shows wear and some of the interior trim has aged. Still, the leather, dashboard controls, power seats, power mirrors, sunroof and power running boards remained functional.

Wheeler also reported no widespread electrical breakdowns during his ownership. Some exterior lights became intermittent, but the truck avoided the cascading electronic failures many owners fear as modern vehicles age.

Original Transmission Still Has Its Factory Fluid

The most surprising detail may not involve the Hemi at all. Wheeler says the Ram’s eight-speed automatic transmission is original and has never had its fluid changed.

That does not mean owners should treat this truck as a recommended maintenance schedule. It is one unusually high-mileage example, and transmission service decisions should be based on the manufacturer’s schedule, operating conditions and the condition of the fluid. However, reaching more than 323,000 miles on the factory transmission and fluid isn’t unusual these days with sealed transmissions. Still, it gets people’s attention who remember transmission fluid service intervals.

Several other major components remained original as well, including the alternator, water pump, power-steering components and brake master cylinder.

Wheeler says he changed the engine oil and filter every 10,000 miles using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-20. That interval helped carry the original 5.7-liter Hemi well beyond 300,000 miles. He eventually had a failure; however, it is hard to say more regular oil changes beyond the manufacturer’s recommended 10k, as he followed, would have prevented it.

Repairs Began Piling Up After 280,000 miles

This was not a repair-free journey. As the truck approached and passed 300,000 miles, Wheeler dealt with several failures that would have retired many vehicles.

At approximately 280,000 miles, he smelled coolant during a trip and noticed the engine overheating. The radiator had failed, so he replaced it in a parking lot and continued driving.

Around 307,000 miles, a driver’s-side wheel bearing failed and the truck had to be towed. Wheeler says the Ram has gone through multiple wheel bearings, enough that he began carrying a spare bearing and the tools needed to replace it on the road.

At approximately 315,000 miles, an air-conditioning refrigerant hose ruptured while he was driving on the interstate. He continued about 10 miles until he could stop safely. The hose was an easier repair than the radiator or bearing, but it added another item to the truck’s growing late-life repair history.

The truck also developed a rear-window leak, a problem that has appeared in owner complaints involving early fifth-generation models. This was also covered in our Ram 1500 known-problems guide where we discussed cracked rear-window frames and water entering around the window or third brake light.

Wheeler previously removed the factory air suspension and installed a conventional lifted suspension. Importantly, he did not say the air suspension had failed at that point. He considered it a potential future liability and replaced it proactively.

Hemi Tick Became a Lifter and Camshaft Failure

The failure that finally parked the Ram occurred while Wheeler was in Kentucky, approximately 800 miles from home. He noticed oil pressure dropping to roughly 15 psi at a stop and then heard a pronounced clacking sound from the 5.7-liter Hemi.

The check-engine light was flashing, but Wheeler decided to drive the truck home. It completed the trip, an impressive final demonstration of durability that may also have increased the internal damage.

Once home, he drained the oil and cut open the filter. He found metal contamination in the filter and on the magnetic drain plug. An oil analysis also showed elevated iron.

His diagnosis was a failed hydraulic roller lifter that damaged a camshaft lobe. As the damaged surfaces continued to run against each other, metal circulated through the lubrication system. This was not the relatively harmless exhaust-manifold version of the Hemi tick. It was a major internal-engine failure.

The timing matters. A lifter and camshaft failure at 323,000 miles is expensive and serious, but it is very different from the same failure occurring at 60,000 or 100,000 miles. This Hemi endured more than 9,200 engine hours, including substantial idle time, before the valvetrain failed.

Why the Owner is Not Giving Up on His Ram 1500

Wheeler does not present the failed Hemi as proof that the Ram 1500 is disposable. His conclusion is nearly the opposite. The truck worked hard for more than 323,000 miles, retained its original engine and transmission for that entire run and brought him home even after the lifter failure became obvious.

He plans to disassemble the engine, replace the camshaft and lifters and repair any additional damage he finds. A follow-up video already documents the cam-and-lifter work, showing that this is a repair story rather than the end of the truck.

The experience also arrives as the 5.7-liter V8 is again central to Ram’s strategy. Ram recently completed extensive validation work to return the Hemi to the Ram 1500, giving buyers an alternative to the twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six.

This Ram 1500 owner review does not establish that every Hemi will reach 323,000 miles. It does show what one heavily used fifth-generation truck endured, which components lasted and which repairs eventually arrived. For buyers wondering whether a modern Ram 1500 can survive long-term ownership, Wheeler’s truck provides a rare answer based on substantially more than 100,000 miles.
