A recall of 47,587 Ford F150 and F250 trucks for an obstructed rearview camera image.
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2023 F-150 and 2023-2026 F-250 SD vehicles equipped with 8-inch SYNC infotainment screens. A software error may cause the rearview camera image to be obstructed by the infotainment home screen menu when the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, “Rear Visibility.”
Affected VINs should be searchable now at the NHTSA website.
Here is the relevant information from the NHTSA Recall notice:
NHTSA ID Number: 26V489
Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
Potential Number of Units Affected: 47,587
Estimated percentage with defect: 100%
Descriptive Information
On F-250 trucks the recalled part was introduced into production on 3/16/2022 and was taken out of production on 6/1/2026.
On F-150 trucks the recalled part was introduced into production on 1/30/2020 and was taken out of production on 12/22/2023.
Affected vehicles are equipped with Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) software prior to version 2.4.12, which in certain conditions may display the camera view menu over the rearview image in Reverse.
These vehicles are not produced in VIN order. Information as to the applicability of this action to specific vehicles can best be obtained by either calling Ford’s toll-free line (1-866-436-7332) or by contacting a local Ford or Lincoln dealer who can obtain specific information regarding the vehicles from the Ford On-line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) database.
23,179 F-250 vehicles are affected.
24,408 F-150 vehicles are affected.
Description of defect or noncompliance:
If a customer leaves the camera “Views” menu open on the SYNC 4 screen and shifts the vehicle into Reverse, the menu overlay does not auto-dismiss. As a result, the menu persists on the screen and will remain on until either (a) the user selects a view or closes the menu, or (b) the vehicle is shifted to Drive and speed exceeds 5 mph. If tested according to FMVSS No. 111, the menu overlay on these vehicles will partially cover certain test objects in the Rear View Camera (RVC) image.
Description of the safety risk, including crash, fire, death, injury:
A rearview camera image that is noncompliant with FMVSS No. 111 could increase the risk of a crash.
Description of the cause:
Affected vehicles contain APIM software that does not dismiss the camera views menu in reverse incertain conditions.
Identification of any warning that can occur:
None.
Chronology
On May 14, 2026, an issue pertaining to a camera views menu that did not dismiss as expected when the vehicle was shifted into Reverse was brought to Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) for review. CCRG reviewed data from the ADAS engineering team showing that the condition can be consistently reproduced by a sequence of customer inputs: if a driver manually activates a camera view (such as the Front View Camera) while not in Reverse, opens the camera views menu, makes no selection, and then shifts into Reverse, the camera views menu fails to auto-dismiss, remaining on-screen and potentially obscuring a portion of the rearview camera image.
During late May and June 2026, CCRG and ADAS engineering teams conducted a read-across of all SYNC 4 vehicle lines, considering every build configuration for display size, screen orientation, and available camera views. CCRG and the Ford Rear Visibility Subject Matter Expert evaluated the rearview image with each configuration against the Field of View requirements of FMVSS 111, Section S5.5.1. The team identified two specific vehicle configurations—Model Year 21-23 F-150 and MY23-26 Super Duty equipped with 8-inch landscape displays and 360 view camera system—where the persistent menu overlay obscured one of the required test objects specified in the NHTSA Laboratory Test Procedure (TP-111V-01, Section C – Default View). Other vehicle configurations use the same software and will have a menu overlay that can persist after shifting into reverse if the entry conditions are met; however, in those configurations, the menu overlays only minimally interfere with the camera image and do not obscure any test objects.
On July 8, 2026, Ford’s Automotive Safety Office (ASO) reviewed the technical findings with the NHTSA Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance (OVSC).
As of July 14, 2026, Ford’s Automotive Safety Office (ASO) and CCRG confirmed that no other global safety or compliance standards are impacted by this condition. Ford is not aware of any warranty reports or Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) related to this concern.
On July 21, 2026, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action for the affected F-150 and Super Duty vehicle populations.
Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.
