Chronology

On September 24, 2025, Ford identified a trend in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) referencing the bubbling and peeling of chrome trim located on the center console of 2019-2020 model year (MY) Ford Expedition vehicles. The VOQs described the condition as creating a sharp edge on the chrome trim after peeling. Five of the six reported VOQs allege customer hand injuries from contact with the sharp edge of the peeling chrome trim.

On October 16, 2025, Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) opened an investigation regarding center console chrome trim peeling on 2019-2021MY Ford Expedition vehicles.

CCRG preliminarily concluded that a safety recall was not appropriate, based primarily on the determination that the condition is overt to the customer and is easily detectable, mitigating the severity and reducing the risk of severe outcomes. CCRG subsequently re-evaluated the severity of the injuries that could result from the peeling of the chrome trim, including by expanding its review of reported injuries, field reports and warranty claims, and concluded that injuries could potentially be more significant than initially thought.

Physical testing was conducted on center console components that initially showed no appearance concerns (bubbling or peeling). Following environmental testing, the chrome plating on these components exhibited bubbling and peeling.

As of June 2, 2026, Ford is aware of 34 customer call center reports, 150 field reports, and 4,634 warranty reports globally, potentially related to peeling center console chrome, received from 5/29/2018 to 6/2/2026. Ford is aware of six Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) potentially related to the condition.

On June 2, 2026, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.

Globally, Ford is aware of one accident, 65 injuries, and no fires related to this concern. Customer reports of hand and finger lacerations associated with this condition include a small number of instances stating that professional medical attention was required.
