Are electric cars and trucks really the future of vehicles?

May it be a commuter car, an SUV, some form of crossover, or a diesel pickup truck, we live in a time when it is crucial for us to pay attention to the environment and take as much care of it as we can. Climate Change and Global Warming are not a hoax, and they are most definitely harming our planet. 

But there is still a way to protect the environment from further harm. We can achieve that by making our practices more sustainable, especially when it comes to our personal vehicles and modes of transportation. Coming back to eco-friendly practices, one thing that many people are doing is investing in modern electric vehicles. These types of automobiles do not produce harmful emissions, and at first, glance appear like a solid investment, but are electric cars truly the future of vehicles and mass transit? 

How exactly do electric vehicles promote sustainability?

The first thing that you need to understand is how electric cars are promoted in regard to sustainability and the environment. 

Electric vehicles are lauded for their ability to reduce the level of toxic gases in the environment. Not only do these gases harm humans but they also harm the environment in various ways. 

However, that is not the case when it comes to Electric Vehicles. Instead of combusting fuel, which in turn ends up as harmful airborne gases, electric vehicles have zero emissions.

Due to this fact, international governments have been quick to pin much of Global Warming and Climate Change on the emissions that come out of automobile exhaust pipes. But is this really the culprit behind poor air quality and things like asthma in small children?

What is the cleanest way to produce electricity for an EV?

If electric vehicles are going to be the future of sustainable transit, the electricity produced for them must be sustainable as well. We must use renewable resources, and tap into alternative energy sources so that the electricity we produce can be environmentally friendly.

Unfortunately, many parts of the world (including the US) still burn coal to produce electrical grid power. Recently, the U.S. Energy Information Administration has released reports on burning coal for electricity, citing that this methodology has been linked to more climate air quality concerns than solutions, so read up and remember that every time you plug in your EV. And forget using nuclear power. Have you seen what the Japanese government is having to deal with over at the Fukushima nuclear power plant? Scary stuff indeed.

And then there is the whole solar panel side of things, which at first glance seems like a much cleaner way of doing things. But all of those photocells that absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity grow weaker over time and eventually must be replaced entirely. And while you can get reimbursed for sending any excess energy/electricity your solar panels create back to the grid in many places, these kickbacks are completely negated by the sheer cost of having to replace your solar panels every 25-30 years. 

Oh, and let’s not forget where most of these solar panel ingredients come from because China has some pretty lax environmental production regulations and is now talking about making it more difficult to access the precious minerals that make solar cells possible in the first place. And then there’s the entire mining process that must first be implemented to draw out these resources from the earth, which oftentimes poisons local watersheds. 

This leaves us with wind turbines and hydroelectric power, both of which have their own unique issues, but are far less prone to pollution than the previously mentioned sources of electrical power. So essentially only time will tell which method proves to be the most reliable, readily available, and sustainable…

Do electric vehicles help you save on maintenance costs?

On the upside, if you compare an electric vehicle to a conventional car or truck, you would see that it costs a lot less to maintain over time. There are no moving components, gaskets, water pumps, or timing chains to tinker with here. Furthermore, there is a reduced tariff on electric vehicles since countries all over the world are trying to encourage the sale and use of EV automobiles. 

When it comes to maintaining electric vehicles, all you need to do is to make sure that your battery/electrical system is running right, and that mechanical components like tires, brakes, and suspension are in good order. There’s no need for harmful chemical additives or oil refinery needs either on an EV, so from this cost savings perspective and environmental impact these machines do have the upper hand.

The convenience of charging your car or truck

Now that electric vehicles are growing in popularity, you can find charging stations in more places than ever before. Moreover, charging your vehicle costs a lot less than refueling it with gasoline or diesel in most states. All you need to do is to plug in your automobile and let it charge, with rapid charge stations providing the fastest charge.

Given how convenient it is to have an electric vehicle, it can easily be said that electric cars are indeed the future of transportation, we just first need to find solutions for where our electricity comes from and implement these practices on a global scale.
