The 2024 Lexus GX is here and, damn! It looks great

The teaser images we posted earlier this week didn’t do this three-row, body-on-frame luxury off-roader justice. The 2024 Lexus GX is just plain hot. With a lot of luxury and grit packed into this tight package, we can’t wait to get behind the wheel. But until we do, here’s what you need to know.

No V-8

In our “what to expect” articles, we postulated that the V-8 would go away and potentially be replaced by a hybrid-only powertrain. We were half right. The V-8 is gone, and there will be a hybrid – but not at launch. The initial powertrain will be a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6 that delivers 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. This is the same engine we see in some of the Lexus sedans as well as the LX.

We don’t have any details on the hybrid that’s coming, but we bet it’ll be a version of the i-Force Max we’ve seen pop up in Toyota trucks – likely the one we see in the Tundra that pairs the same twin turbo engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor and delivers 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque.

New Overtrail off-road trim

The GX has always been known for its off-road prowess, and the new Overtrail trim pushes this SUV’s limits to the edge. Available in Overtrail and Overtrail+ options, this trim will come standard with 33-inch all-terrain tires, black accented overfenders and an aluminum skid plate. A bi-tone exterior paint combo will be available to help differentiate these trims visually.

You’ll also have available Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), crawl control, downhill assist control and 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor systems. Plus, an electronic rear-locking differential is exlusive to the Overtrail trims.

The + will add more available luxury amenities such as off-road comfortable seats, seat massagers and cushion extenders.

The 2024 Lexus GX will have four other trims in addition to the Overland models: Premium, Premium+, Luxury and Luxury+. Overtrail will be slotted in the middle of the pack.

Preliminary specs are below.

2024 Lexus GX preliminary specs

GA-F platform

The GX will share the global GA-F platform, which it shares with the recently revamped LX. This is a lightweight ladder frame (i.e. body-on-frame) platform, the increases body rigidity and helps with off-road performance. This platform also incorporates a double-wishbone front suspension and a rear multi-link suspension. An adaptive variable suspension is available.

It’s worth nothing this GA-F platform is also shared with Toyota vehicles like the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia and (get this) the global Land Cruiser. Which makes us think the recent Land Cruiser rumors might be true.

Seats up to 7

Unlike the also revealed Lexus TX, the GX is more of an occasional three-row vehicle. It has that rear row, but it’s unlikely anyone bigger than a child or small adult will fit back there. The second row is available in two configurations, a bench or captain’s chairs, so the good news is that third row will only seat two. The bench will have 60/40 folding capabilities, and the third row is available in power and manual seat configurations.

Speaking of seats, the surfaces are covered with either semi-aniline leather or NuLuxe. There are also up to six charge ports (four in Overtrail trims), 12 cup holders and wireless charging availability.

One additional note with regard to seating: Lexus states you can fit five suitcases with the third row folded flat. No word on if any suitcases fit with the third row up – which speaks again to the idea that this is an occasional third-row vehicle.

Tech forward

Even though this is the most rugged vehicle in the Lexus lineup, it gets all the new tech gadgets we’ve seen rolling out in Lexus vehicles beginning with the NX. So, you’ll see the new Lexus infotainment system (ask it a joke!), a 14-inch touch-screen display, available head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a 12.3-inch behind-the-wheel cluster.

Lexus did make it a point to state that the most frequently touched controls remain physical controls, so you’ll still see dials and buttons for volume and HVAC systems.

The bottom line on the 2024 Lexus GX

It’s been a while since we’ve been giddy with delight about a Lexus. But the new GX is definitely something to get excited about. Luxury amenities in serious off-road conditions is something we can definitely get behind.

Though these details are preliminary, what we’ve seen so far is, well, awesome. We’ll share more as we get more.

the 2024 Lexus GX will be assembled in Japan and is expected to go on sale in early 2024.
