Toyota teases 2024 Grand Highlander third row

We’ll get to see the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander in real life next week at the Chicago Auto Show. But before the vehicle goes live on prime time, we’re getting a sneak peek at the third row.

Toyota released a photo of an adult in the third row along with a scant 112-word press release. While the details are nil, here’s what we can glean from the photo and release.

2024 Grand Highlander third-row amenities

Other than the legroom for an adult passenger, perhaps the first thing you’ll notice is the large windows that will let in a lot of light to the third row. We also see a lot of storage cubbies and a unique-looking charging dock, with what appears to be a USB-C port. We also see lights and speakers in the headliner – which indicate some kind of driver’s voice amplification option.

What we don’t see is the location of the third-row air vents – not on the C Pillar or in the headliner. This could mean they’re in an awkward knee- or floor-level location or there aren’t any.

Though the photo only shows two people sitting in the third row, it appears there are seatbelts for three. We’re guessing captain’s chairs are available, and that there will be a standard bench middle seat – which means seating for up to eight passengers.

Better cargo space?

One of the big downsides of three-row SUV full of passengers is the lack of cargo space for all their stuff. But the brief press release mentions the cargo area will fit seven pieces of luggage. We don’t know if that’s backpacks or roller board suitcases, but we’re intrigued.

The 2024 Grand Highlander might finally be an SUV that could best a minivan in terms of cargo stowage.

The bottom line

Though we don’t have any concrete details yet, we’ve made some educated guesses on what the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander will be. The good news: We only have one more week to wait for the reveal.

And since we’ve rated a lot of third rows in our time, you better believe we’ll be spending some QT in that third row to see if it’s the real deal.

Well it would be nice to think the 3rd row is something that would be spacious for adults, one detail makes me wonder. If you notice that the adults foot is next to a track for the seat in front of him and it goes a few inches behind the back of his foot. Does this mean that when the 2nd row is all the way back the legroom will be cramped for 3rd row or just that the track is there.

Either way it seems it would have to beat the H/K twins/ Pilot, for room back there. Looking good so far as the current Highlander is pretty cramped back there.

The air vents are right behind the light just over the back window.

My 2014 Highlander almost no luggage space with the 3rd row seats up. So that’s what will be the best change. Great automobile still even with 186,000 miles on it.
