Acura is giving the mid-size MDX a NSX inspired makeover, with the all new MDX PMC Edition. The new variant made its debut at the L.A. Auto Show last year, and is handcrafted by the same technicians that also build the NSX supercar. But this high level of detail and precision does come with a price, with the MDX PMC Edition starting at $63,745.
So what do you get for this lofty sum of cash, for one thing, you are rewarded with a very distinctive coat of red paint. Dubbed Valencia Red Pearl, this shade of red is exclusive to the PMC edition, and is also found on its sedan counterpart the TLX PMC. This vivid shade of red is also complimented by black trim that is scattered all over the car. The wheels, mirror caps, door handles, grille, and even the exhaust also get slathered in a sinister shade of black. The interior flips the script, with the all black interior being contrasted by red stitching and a red hued badge denoting its place in the 330 or so examples that the company intends to build.
But the PMC Edition is purely an appearance package, which means some of the magic that is defined by the NSX does not make its way to the MDX, with the SUV still being powered by the familiar 3.5 liter V6 that makes 290 horsepower, and shifts through the gears via the carryover nine-speed automatic transmission. All of this power is routed to all four wheels through Acura’s SH-AWD system.
The PMC Edition also offers a healthy amount of standard equipment, with the model being equipped with the A-Spec package, active dampers, GPS linked climate control, a whole suite of standard safety features, as well as the firm’s familiar ELS 3D audio system. Several other luxury items are also part of the fun, and they certainly play a big role in the PMC’s high asking price. This figure is higher than a standard MDX with all the option boxes ticked, and it actually manages to be even higher than the more powerful Sport Hybrid trim. It is hand built of course, and with the MDX being the second best selling model behind the RDX, chances are that all 330 will quickly find homes.
A mere 300 copies will be sold in the U.S. market, with the Canadian marketing getting the remaining 30. Look for the Acura MDX PMC Edition to begin arriving at Acura dealerships starting on February 1st.
