Toyota may have ruled the 2019 Texas Truck Rodeo when it came to sheer quantity of awards won, but Lexus wanted to show that it was not to be ignored, with the up-level luxury brand earning the Full-Size Luxury SUV of Texas Award for its GX460 Luxury model.

The GX is a full-size luxury SUV based on the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser, and while it is aging and is starting to fall behind some luxury SUV rivals. This grizzled veteran managed to prove that it still had the hardware necessary to beat out several other full-size luxury SUV offerings to wow the voters of the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) and win the top honor for its category.

“We are thrilled to have TAWA journalists experience the updated 2020 GX 460 Luxury and select it as the best full-size luxury SUV in its class,” said Steve Saito, Lexus Product Marketing Manager. “Designed with safety, style, and capability in mind, the 2020 GX is luxuriously crafted to take you further than ever before.”

When it comes to luxury and versatility, Lexus is not kidding when it comes to how much of both is found in the GX460 with the model adopting many of the same off-road focused features and equipment that also define its lesser counterpart the Toyota Land Cruiser. But all of this capability is wrapped in a rather luxurious package with the beefy Lexus featuring generous amounts of wood, leather, and other high quality materials to truly make it a unique driving experience when out on the daily commute, or on a weekend jaunt through tough off-road trails. The Luxury model in particular benefits from an all new Off-Road Package that bundles together a whole host of off-road focused features including Lexus’s Multi-Terrain monitor, Panoramic View monitor, a heavy duty transmission cooler, fuel tank protector, Crawl Control, and even Multi Terrain select to serve as the figurative exclamation point.

As for the model itself, it’s no secret that it is due for a much needed overhaul, but Lexus has so far not revealed when it intends to unveil the next generation GX to the world. But in the meantime, it is good to see that the current model is still capable of wowing people and winning awards, and we are confident that it can hold down the fort until it is eventually replaced.
