Lincoln’s quest to eliminate the “MK” naming scheme has finally entered the home stretch. With the newly renamed Nautilus, all new Aviator, and the revamped Navigator all helping to shine a big spotlight on Lincoln’s utility lineup, the luxury marque has turned its collective attention to the last remaining MK-infused model in its roster, the aging but segment crucial MKC CUV.
While the heavily veiled teaser image does not reveal too much about the new CUV’s finer details, it is confirmed that the Corsair name plate will rise from the dust and broken pieces of “MKC” lettering. In addition to the new name (which is also shared with the WW2 era F4U Corsair fighter plane,) the Corsair will also bring new exterior styling that is expected to feature heavy influence from both the Aviator and the bigger Navigator which should allow the Corsair to truly shine in this regard when viewed against some of its segment rivals.
“With the continued strength of our SUVs – from the record-breaking sales of Navigator, strong customer response to the 2019 Nautilus and the arrival of the all-new Aviator in the summer, the Corsair will further strengthen Lincoln’s lineup,” the manufacturer revealed in an accompanying statement.
Prior rumors have suggested that Lincoln was going to unveil the Corsair as a 2021 offering, but the rapid growth in U.S. SUV and CUV demand (as well as sales) forced the brand to speed up development to allow the Corsair to have a greater chance of taking a more prominent bite out of the luxury SUV sales pie. Performance hardware for the 2020 Corsair is largely unknown at this point, but look for the 2.0 liter EcoBoost four cylinder to arrive as a base motor. In the Escape, it produces 245 horsepower, so look for it to retain this figure in Corsair duty. A beefier EcoBoost V6 could appear as an option, though separate reports appear to suggest that a hybrid powertrain is also in the cards, but we suspect that if the hybrid is indeed coming, it would possibly appear later in the production run.
Lincoln plans to formally reveal all details surrounding the 2020 Corsair on April 17th when it makes it debut at Lincolns booth at the 2019 New York Auto Show. In the meantime, look for Lincoln to actively intensify its teaser campaign in the coming weeks, and we look forward to seeing if the 2020 Lincoln Corsair can help solidify the already potent foundation laid by its corporate counterparts. In the meantime you can check out the fore-mentioned teaser video which can be seen below.
