The current-generation Toyota 4Runner was introduced in 2025 as the sixth-generation (aka “N500”) of the SUV. Made in Japan, the 4Runner is a body-on-frame, truck-based utility, sharing its platform with the Tacoma pickup. The 4Runner has earned a reputation for being highly reliable, but still has its share of known problems.
The information in this breakdown of the Toyota 4Runner’s issues comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Toyota’s own press releases and technician bulletins, owner forums, and social media.
Engine & Transmission Issues

The 2025-2026 4Runner has few issues reported and only two recalls, neither of which are for drivetrain problems.
A transmission clunking issue (see below) is sometimes reported in owner’s forums and on social media and is being tracked by some technicians, but has not resulted in a recall or TSB. A similar issue is reported in the mechanically-related Tacoma pickup truck.
Major Recalls for the 4Runner

These are the major recalls from the NHTSA for the 4Runner in this generation. Recall number is included for reference and recalls are listed newest to oldest.
Load Capacity Labels (26V-282): Some 2026 4Runner models have incorrect load carrying capacity labels, which could lead to an error in tire choice if factory tires and/or wheels are replaced.
Electrical System / Instrument Panel (25V-595): Due to a startup software error, the digital instrument panel may fail to display critical data, such as vehicle speed, brake warnings, and tire pressure indicators. Repaired with over-the-air updates or dealership reprogram of cluster.
Toyota 4Runner Technical Service Bulletins

A technical service bulletin (TSB) is a set of instructions sent to technicians and dealerships regarding common warranty claims, recall-related inspections or repairs, or fixes for known issues with a vehicle. The following are the most-mentioned TSBs issued for the 4Runner that are not part of a recall (above).
Front Brake Squeal (TSB-0006-26): Addresses a commonly-reported front brake noise issue in early 2025-2026 4Runner production models. TSB repair is covered under warranty on those models.
4Runner Known Problems

The 4Runner, being new, has few issues related to its release. This is common with Toyota products, which are generally considered robust and well-vetted before entering production for sale. Especially those vehicles which are built in Japan. As such, only one relatively common issue is reported as a problem for the new 4Runner.
Transmission Clunking: Many owners experience occasional abrupt shifting or mechanical “clunks” between first and second gear. This is also a common complaint with the Tacoma.
How To Check For Recalls On Your Toyota

The easiest way to check for current recalls that may affect your Highlander is to visit the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) Recalls page and enter your license plate or 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) to run a search. You can also do this at the Toyota Recalls Lookup page.
