A recall for 2,785 2018-2019 Silverado 1500/2500/3500 and GMC Sierra 1500/2500/3500 vehicles due to an issue with roof-rail airbags.

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, Silverado 3500, GMC Sierra 2500, and Sierra 3500 vehicles. The left-side or right-side roof rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

Affected VINs should be searchable now at the NHTSA website.

Here is the relevant information from the NHTSA Recall notice:

NHTSA ID Number: 26V325

Manufacturer: General Motors, LLC

Components: AIR BAGS

Potential Number of Units Affected: 2,785

Estimated percentage with defect: 1%

Descriptive Information

Description of defect or noncompliance:

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain 2018 model year Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles and 2019 model year Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 vehicles. In these vehicles, the roof-rail airbag (“RRAB”) inflators, which are located on the left- and right-side roof rails above the headliner, may contain a manufacturing defect that may result in inflator end cap separation or inflator sidewall split.

Description of the safety risk, including crash, fire, death, injury:

If the end cap separates from the RRAB inflator or a sidewall rupture occurs, the compressed gas will escape from the inflator and the end cap or other components can be propelled into the vehicle, potentially causing an occupant injury if the vehicle is occupied.

Description of the cause:

GM believes the root cause relates to two potential supplier manufacturing defects occurring together—a small crack in the inflator canister introduced during manufacturing along with a small amount of water inadvertently being left in the canister after the washing process which allows for stress corrosion cracking over time, weakening the structural integrity of the pressurized canister.

Identification of any warning that can occur:

None stated.

Chronology

On April 13, 2026, a GM investigator submitted a report to GM’s Speak Up For Safety (SUFS) program following report from a dealer that a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado experienced a potential rupture of the right side roof-rail airbag (RRAB) while the vehicle was parked and unattended. Photographs provided by the dealer show the end cap of the inflator is missing and the headliner and vehicle roof are damaged. GM is not aware of any other inflator ruptures associated with this inflator lot. On May 14, 2026, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall of roof-rail airbags containing inflators from the same supplier production lot as the Silverado field incident.
