BOLT Lock 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning EV pickup’s one-key solution

The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning EV certainly made a stir when it was first announced all those months back. Love it, hate it, or write it off as foolhardy, there is no ignoring the fact the future of pickup truck power is becoming increasingly electronic and automatic in nature.

But having a brilliant, fully electrified Ford F-150 does not mean that it will deter thieves and vandals. Lightning F-150 pickups are still work trucks at the end of the day, for what’s the point in having a bed and towing capacity if you don’t use it? This leads us back to the topic of thieving miscreants and that form of ilk, for they are the type that is forever quick to pilfer unsecured belongings from the back of a pickup.

The brainiacs behind the patented BOLT Lock system understand this better than anyone. Security specialists tend to go to great lengths to make their locks a royal pain to disengage, and BOLT’s “Breakthrough One-Key Lock Technology” for the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning EV pickup is about as good as it gets.

Oh, you didn’t know that the all-caps BOLT name was an acronym for “Breakthrough One-Key Lock Technology?”

Well, get ready to be astonished all over again, because BOLT Locks truly has some of the slickest security options imaginable for this futuristic Ford truck.

New electric suit and a clever hat trick

Much like other platforms, which have a physical key bob for inserting into the Wisconsin-based brand’s patented “one-turn tumbler,” the new BOLT Lock product line for the electric F-150 Lightning comes primed to be permanently programmed to the truck’s ignition key. Thus far, BOLT Lock has made the following products compatible with this tech-loaded Ford F-150 Lightning: 5/8” receiver lock, coupler pin lock, padlock, cable lock, trailer coupler lock, and locking recovery hook.

“While this is not our first EV-compatible application, it does mark the first electric pickup model we support. Our aftermarket products offer the convenience, security, and peace of mind active truck owners require to lock up their valuable gear,” —Jason Buckles, BOLT Lock

Upon inserting and twisting the truck’s ignition key into the lock cylinder for the first time, BOLT technology gets to work permanently programming itself. As the key is turned, a series of spring-loaded tumbler plates move up and down until they precisely match the pattern of the key in question. After returning the key to its original position and removing it from the lock, the tumbler locks these plates into place for all of eternity. That way the cylinder of the locking barrel becomes coded to that key, and that key alone.
