The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is moving up in the world – or at least two of its newest trims are. The top-selling truck in its segment raises the suspension lift on the TRD Pro and Trail Edition trims for this model year. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also the Trail Edition which returns in a 4×4-only package that emphasizes styling, value, utility and a focus on off-road performance built around the Tacoma 4×4 Double Cab.
Last year, Toyota teased everyone about these trims and got us all excited. They merely said: “Two new adventure-ready trucks are on the horizon for the midsize segment-leading Toyota Tacoma. Gear up and get ready!”
We are geared up and ready, so let’s take a closer at the 2022 Toyota Tacoma‘s two biggest updates.
The increased suspension lift is the big news. We knew this was coming and now we know more about. It will add 1.5 inches to the front and 0.5 inches to the rear for a total of 9.4 inches of ground clearance plus TRD forged upper control arms. This will increase the vehicle’s approach and departure angles making it even more capable off-road. There will also be new black 16-inch TRD wheels (which is the first thing Toyota teased us with), fitted with new Goodyear tires and a TRD Pro stamping on the rear quarter panel, plus black badging returns for 2022.
In addition to some new hood graphics there’s the eye-catching new TRD Pro exclusive color, Electric Lime Metallic.
The six-speed manual transmission returns for the TRD Pro, which manual transmission diehards will be happy to hear. There is a six-speed automatic as well.
This truck is only offered as a double-cab 4×4 and has a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that delivers 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. The truck’s max towing capacity is 6,400 pounds. In true TRD Pro form, the aluminum skid plate comes standard and so do the unique LED headlights and LED fog lamps.
Toyota revealed the Trail Edition as a limited edition in the 2021 model year, but it will arrive in full force for the 2022 model year. It’s based on the SR5 package, but like the TRD Pro has a higher lift. In fact, the suspension lift for the Trail Edition is the same as the TRD Pro, but there’s also a standard rear locking differential, off-road skid plates and new bronze 16-inch wheels.
And like the TRD Pro, the 2022 Tacoma Trail Edition will only be available as a double cab 4WD truck. Available colors will be Lunar Rock (new for 2022), Army Green, Super White, Midnight and Black Metallic.
While the completely redesigned 2022 Tundra is stealing all the spotlight and attention this year, the Tacoma still has some excitement to churn up. Emphasis on the word up. The Tacoma is smaller than the Tundra, obviously, but with the lifts on the TRD Pro and the Trail Edition, it becomes more of a rugged, tough truck. And hey, if nothing else, Toyota always has great colors for its trucks, and that Metallic Lime Green is pretty awesome.
The Tacoma has always had its passionate fans, and surely these changes will resonate with them as they wait for the next-gen model, which could be coming as early as 2023..
