The modern Dodge Durango comes with a cool “racetrack” taillight design that traces the upper portion of the rear end, making for an unmistakable appearance from far away. Unfortunately, owners have long complained about portions of the large taillight failing, making that racetrack design way less cool. To address the issue, Stellantis has announced an extension of the warranty coverage for these troublesome taillights. Owners who have already paid to fix a faulty taillight out of pocket may also be eligible for reimbursement. With the Durango being Dodge’s bestselling vehicle over the past few years, it’s a smart move to address a fairly common issue.

“Durango has carved out a unique place as America’s three-row muscle SUV, and its signature racetrack taillamp is an unmistakable part of its identity,” said Matt McAlear, Dodge CEO. “This warranty extension is about standing behind our vehicles, supporting our owners and reinforcing the confidence they place in Dodge.”

This new warranty coverage applies to certain 2018-2024 Dodge Durango vehicles, and the company will notify affected owners directly by mail. It covers the liftgate taillamp LEDs when they stop illuminating or illuminate only in part, not every rear light on the SUV. If you own one of these Durangos and receive a letter, you can contact your dealership to discuss getting the taillight fixed under warranty. If your Durango’s taillight is working fine, you don’t need to do anything. Just know that you have extended warranty coverage if the taillight begins to falter.

The Problem

In select Dodge Durango vehicles, portions of the taillight assembly may stop working. In some cases, it’s a very small section that’s hard to notice, but in others, large chunks of LEDs go dark, and it looks bad. In speaking with owners of these vehicles, it seems that a key issue is water getting into the taillight housing. As you can imagine, electrical components plus moisture can lead to electrical failures.

The issue appears to be largely focused on the center section of the taillight, so it doesn’t generally affect the brake lights or turn signals. However, the Durango is a good-looking SUV, and owners don’t want jacked-up-looking taillights. There are also examples of the outer portions of the lights failing, in which case the brake lights and turn signals can be affected. Those outer lights are separate from the liftgate assembly covered by this extension.

Of course, Durango owners can pay out of pocket for a replacement part, but buying a new taillight can cost upwards of $500. Fortunately, this new warranty program will extend coverage for these taillights, and some owners who have already paid out of pocket may be reimbursed. Even if your Durango is outside the extended warranty period, the company may still replace the unit under warranty.

The Warranty Change

Dodge’s standard basic limited warranty lasts three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Under this extension, eligible liftgate LED taillight assemblies are covered for five years with unlimited mileage. In other words, this provides five years of coverage for the taillight, starting on the vehicle’s in-service date.

If your eligible 2018-2024 Dodge Durango is outside the five-year coverage period and you’re experiencing the taillight issue, there will be a six-month window from the customer notification date during which you may be able to get the liftgate taillight fixed under this new warranty program. Owners who already paid for this repair can follow the reimbursement instructions in their notification letter and submit the required documentation.

Dodge Durango Sales

Since the Challenger and Charger left the lineup after the 2023 model year, the Durango has carried Dodge on the sales sheet. With the Hornet and new Charger struggling to move units, the Durango has become even more important to the brand, and the brawny SUV has done a great job of carrying the load.

In 2025, the Durango posted its strongest sales since 2005, up 37% from 2024. In the third quarter of 2026, Durango retail sales were up 18% over the same period in 2025. So, even though it hasn’t received any major updates in years, it’s still selling very well.

With this new warranty coverage, one of the key complaints from owners should become less of a concern going forward. Luckily, the muscular Durango is so much fun to drive and has such a great cabin that troublesome taillights haven’t turned away many potential customers.
