A recall of 98,828 Rivian R1S, R1T, and R2 vehicles for rearview camera display issues.

Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling certain 2022-2027 R1S, 2022-2026 R1T, and 2027 R2 vehicles. The rearview camera image may be obstructed by a notification when in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, “Rear Visibility.”

Affected VINs should be searchable now at the NHTSA website.

Here is the relevant information from the NHTSA Recall notice:

NHTSA ID Number: 26V597

Manufacturer: Rivian Automotive, LLC

Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION

Potential Number of Units Affected: 98,828

Estimated percentage with defect: 100%

Descriptive Information

The recall population includes certain Model Year 2022-2026 R1T, 2022-2027 R1S, and 2027 R2 vehicles that may have been equipped with software that may not properly display the rearview camera image for the required time period in certain rare circumstances when shifting to reverse. The suspect period began on August 23, 2021, when Rivian started to build vehicles with potentially affected software and ended on August 10, 2026, when Rivian stopped building vehicles with the potentially affected software. That population was determined using manufacturing records. Similar vehicles not included in this recall were built and/or delivered with software that is not affected.

As of the date of this filing, Rivian is not aware of any customer reports, accidents, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue in any market and a software update that remedies the condition is already available for all vehicles. This software update is installed in over 95% of the impacted vehicles, remedying the potential noncompliance condition. Affected R1 vehicles are 95% updated and 96% of the impacted R2 vehicles are updated.

Description of defect or noncompliance:

Customers, in rare instances while stability control is off in certain drive modes and where the customer has left the vehicle for a period of time and returned, may experience a safety alert on the center display informing them that stability control is off and asking if they would like to return to a mode with stability control on (per FMVSS 126 requirements). If the driver places the vehicle in reverse without making a selection, the drive mode change notification may overlap the camera image until the vehicle moves at which point the camera image appears. This overlap condition requires a very specific set of operations in a specific order to potentially occur. Because the rearview image may be overridden by a drive mode notification before the vehicle moves, it may not fulfill the requirements of FMVSS 111.

Description of the safety risk, including crash, fire, death, injury:

A rear-view image that does not display at the start of a backing event may increase the risk of a crash. Rivian is not aware of any customer reports, crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to this condition.

Description of the cause:

None stated.

Identification of any warning that can occur:

A reverse image that does not appear would be noticeable to the driver when it does not appear as expected. Selecting the camera page on the center display or the vehicle moving and speed becoming non-zero would result in the reverse image reappearing.

Chronology

From July 2026 through September 2026, Rivian investigated the condition, discovered during internal testing, to evaluate the nature of the specific behavior required to activate the condition, determine the potentially affected population, and possible implications for FMVSS 111, Rear Visibility.

On September 10, 2026, Rivian determined that a potential noncompliance to FMVSS 111, Rear Visibility cannot be ruled out.
