The CX-50 debuted in 2023 as a more rugged-looking version of the CX-5. Initially assumed as a replacement for the CX-5, the CX-50 instead became a companion in the Mazda lineup, aiming for a more adventure-seeking crowd of middle-sized SUV buyers. For 2025, the CX-50 debuted a new hybrid model.

These are the known problems and recalls for the CX-50.

Hybrid Transmission Woes

A limited batch of 2025 Hybrid vehicles were shipped in factory/transport mode, preventing them from shifting into drive without pressing the brake pedal. Dealers must reprogram the powertrain units and deactivate the factory mode.

This issue was addressed with Mazda recall 25V471.

Another known transmission issue occurred with early production units. Early CX-50 models (especially 2023) experienced noticeable hesitation and bumpy shifts. Some owners reported going into “limp mode” and losing highway power due to sensor and transmission faults. These were usually fixed under warranty.

Mazda recall 23V275000 affects the debut 2023 model year. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) control module may have a defective ABS unit that reduces braking ability. Dealers inspect and replace the ABS unit as needed.

In addition to that recall, various Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) have addressed squeaky brake pedals and issues with the electronic parking brake failing to disengage consistently.

Front Suspension Bolts and Wheel Detachment

2025 model year CX-50 vehicles (including the hybrid) are subject to Mazda recall 7925J. This recall affects roughly 1,000 CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid vehicles and involves a factory oversight that means some front suspension fasteners were not tightened to the correct specifications, which could lead to wheel detachment. Dealers are instructed to inspect, retighten, or replace bolts free of charge.

Trailer Hitches Falling Off

The first of the trailer hitch recalls was for the 2023 Mazda CX-50, recall number 23V135000. Incorrect torque specifications on Mazda Genuine Accessory hitches could cause the assembly to loosen and even detach.

A year later, 2024 and then 2025 models saw their own recall (25V167000) for the same issue. Improper installation torque by technicians could allow bolts to loosen and the trailer hitch assembly to detach. Dealers will inspect and retighten the bolts.

Other Recalls and Known Issues

The 2025 Mazda CX-50 saw another recall, this one for airbag software malfunctions. Recall 25V413000 involved incorrect module configuration and incompatible sensors, which could cause the airbags to deploy improperly in an accident. Dealers will update the module software to fix the defect.

Another known issue throughout the Mazda lineup of turbocharged models includes carbon buildup in direct-injection turbocharged engines at around 30,000 or so miles. This requires intake valve cleaning as a regular maintenance item.

Battery drain has been another issue often cited by CX-50 owners. Especially in the new hybrid model. A stronger AGM batter is usually the fix. Similarly, Bluetooth system dropouts or lagging/freezing are also a common complaint.

Several documented cases of oil pan leaks around the drain plug or seal have been reported. Sometimes, this is caused by stripped threads from improper oil changes. So no TSB or recall has been issued.

The easiest way to check for current recalls that may affect your Mazda CX-50 is to visit the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) Recalls page and enter your license plate or 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) to run a search.
