The Nissan Frontier Ronin Concept is currently on display at the 2026 SEMA Show, showcasing the abilities of the popular midsize pickup when modified to the extreme. The name Ronin means “masterless warrior” in Japanese, and this truck has been built to beat just about any competitor in an off-road racing venue, with a race-bred suspension system, a forced-induction system from the legendary Nissan R35 GT-R supercar and many other high-performance components.

“Capability, confidence and off-road excitement have been core parts of the Nissan brand for decades, from rugged daily drivers to iconic desert racing victories and beyond,” said Kim Less, vice president, Aftersales and Customer Loyalty, Nissan Americas. “As we look toward a future of even more capable trucks and SUVs, including an all-new Xterra, these SEMA Show concepts allow builders to unleash their creativity, while also exploring ideas and innovations that can help inform the direction for accessorizing future Nissan trucks and SUVs.”

The SEMA Show is gigantic, and a big part of having an impact at the sprawling Vegas convention is catching the attention of the people walking past your booth. There is no question that the Nissan Frontier Ronin Concept does a great job of drawing attention simply with its appearance. The Nissan Baltic Teal exterior is heavily decorated with black and bronze graphics that present the look of a topographical map, with a splash of extra color on the sides along with the Ronin name.

The build team then added a custom front fascia and grille, custom high-clearance front and rear bumpers, a custom skid plate, prototype NISMO off-road fender flares with integrated running lights and an array of NISMO off-road components – including rock sliders, a roof rack, 6-inch driving lights, 4-inch A-pillar lights and a spare tire carrier. The exterior of the Nissan Frontier Ronin Concept is finished with a set of prototype NISMO ASCEND 17×9-inch beadlock wheels wrapped in 35-inch Yokohama Geolandar X-AT rubber.

The result of the exterior upgrades is a Nissan Frontier that looks like it is ready to go off-road racing, but the company didn’t stop at just making it look fast.

Nissan Supercar-Like Power

The Nissan Ronin Concept is powered by the VQ38DD that comes standard in the modern Frontier, but it has been upgraded with the addition of turbochargers from the R35 GT-R NISMO. This rear-mounted forced-induction setup is mated to the truck’s engine with help from an ECUTEK engine management system with a Visconti Tuning adapter harness. A custom front-mount intercooler system helps keep the engine cool, while a dual off-road intake system and a custom NISMO off-road exhaust system with 3-inch cutouts help the engine breathe easier on both ends.

There is no power estimate from Nissan, but we know that the standard VQ38DD in the Frontier offers 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. We also know that the VR38DETT in the R35 GT-R NISMO packs 600 horsepower and 481 lb-ft of torque. The forced-induction system from the GT-R NISMO is capable of lifting a 3.8-liter engine to those numbers, but seeing as how the Frontier engine has different camshafts along with other internal differences, we would guess that the output of the Nissan Ronin Concept is a bit below that of the supercar.

That boost system surely makes this midsize pickup a blast to drive, but to make it fun to drive down a long dirt road, this Frontier has some serious upgrades under the truck as well.

Race-Bred Suspension

As you can see from the stance of the Nissan Ronin Concept, this is not just a Frontier with more power and a custom paint job. First, the build team installed the rear axle assembly from the full-size Nissan Titan, along with a high-performance suspension package that begins with Bilstein Black Hawk M 9400 70-mm four-way adjustable coilovers.

Next, Nissan turned to the go-fast experts at CJD Racing for a list of long-travel components that include custom upper and lower control arms, custom spindles, extended axles, custom position-adjustable rear shock absorber mounts, 12-inch extended shackles and long-travel progressive leaf spring packs. This suspension build lifts the Frontier by over four inches while allowing for 14 inches of wheel travel, giving it the ability to blast over just about any off-road surface.

It should also be mentioned that this Ronin Concept features a custom high-performance braking kit with six-piston calipers over two-piece, 335-millimeter slotted rotors up front and slotted and vented 286-millimeter rotors out back, along with stainless steel lines and performance pads.

A Cabin Modified for Comfort at Speed

On the inside, the Nissan Frontier Ronin Concept is fitted with a set of Kinetic sport front bucket seats that look like something you would expect in an off-road race truck. A custom gauge pod on the dashboard displays boost, oil pressure and exhaust temperature information, adding to the sporty feel of the cabin. The topographical design from the exterior is continued throughout the cockpit on the seat belts and door skins, while NISMO off-road all-weather floor mats keep the carpeting clean on trips to the local ORV park.
