Any truck with four-wheel-drive has the ability to handle rough terrain, but over the past decade, the American auto industry has seen an increase in the number of off-road-focused performance trucks that stand out from the rest of the crowd. While the most popular of the off-road trucks are in the bestselling half-ton segment, there are some competitors in both the mid-sized and heavy duty classes that will handle a rocky trail or deep mud as well as the half-ton trucks. In fact, there are several popular models that have more than one off-road-ready trim level, leading to a variety of performance trucks for different budgets.
Today, we bring you our list of the top five off-road trucks on sale today. Technically, it is the top eight, with several key models offering several off-road packages that are worthy of making our list.
No. 5 – Ram 2500 Power Wagon is the Most Capable HD

Since 2005, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon has been the cream of the crop when it came to heavy duty off-road trucks. For the majority of those years, the Power Wagon package was only offered with a Hemi V8, but for 2027, the high output Cummins Turbo Diesel is also available in the off-road-ready three-quarter-ton pickup. The standard gasoline engine offers 405 horsepower and 429lb-ft of torque while the new diesel option delivers 430 horsepower and 1,075lb-ft of torque. All of that power makes the Power Wagon the most capable off-road truck when it comes to towing and hauling, but it is also the most off-road-capable heavy duty truck.
Key off-road features of the Ram 2500 Power Wagon include front and rear electronic locking differentials, Bilstein shocks with the Ram auto-leveling rear air suspension system, a disconnecting front sway bar, and a handful of skid plates. You get either all-terrain 33-inch tires on 17-inch wheels on the Hemi models or 34-inch tires on 20-inch wheels on Cummins models. The size and weight might be a hindrance in certain off-road situations, but as the most capable off-road truck in the heavy duty segment, it landed securely on our list of the top five off-road trucks.
No. 4 – The Toyota Tacoma has Two TRD Off-Road Options

There are several Toyota Tacoma models that can be fun in most off-road settings, but the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro models are each designed to perform best in different off-road settings. The Tacoma TRD Off-Road is designed to serve as a great all-around off-roader, tackling trails with the best of them. The Tacoma TRD Pro is engineered to handle rough terrain at higher speeds, making it more suitable for those off-roaders who want to rocket across the desert.
The Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road comes powered by the turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, sending 278 horsepower and 317lb-ft of torque to all four wheels by means of a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission. The suspension system includes Bilstein monotube shocks with remote reservoirs and a locking rear differential, while the standard tire are a basic all-terrain tire.
As for the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, it is powered by the i-FORCE MAX 2.4L turbocharged hybrid powertrain, delivering 326 horsepower and 465lb-ft of torque with help from an 8-speed automatic transmission. The more crucial difference between the two Tacoma TRD packages is the suspension system, as the TRD pro features Fox QS3 adjustable internal bypass shocks and rear piggyback reservoirs, and a lift kit that adds an inch up front and half-inch out back. This package also comes with Goodyear Territory 265/70R18 R/T tires, offering better grip than the tires on the TRD Off-Road.
#3 – All Jeep Gladiators Are Solid, but the Rubicon Earns its Name

Every Jeep Gladiator model comes standard with everything needed to go off-roading, but the Rubicon model is the head of the mid-sized class. Named after the legendary Rubicon Trail in California, this version of the Gladiator is one of the most off-road-ready vehicles in Jeep history, thanks to a long list of unique features.
The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon is powered by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, which is really the least impressive aspect of the model, delivering 285 horsepower and 260lb-ft of torque with an 8-speed automatic transmission. That drivetrain makes the Gladiator one of the best mid-sized trucks in terms of towing and hauling, but it only plays a small part in the off-road story. What makes the Gladiator Rubicon so great when it leaves paved surfaces is the combined effort of the Rock-Trac 4×4 System, Tru-Lok front and rear electronic locking differentials, front and rear Dana 44 axles, a disconnecting sway bar, a specially tuned suspension system with Red Tenneco shocks, rock rails, skid plates, and 33inch all-terrain tires on 17-inch wheels. Add in that the whole top is easily removable, and the Rubicon is available with all sorts of premium interior goodies, and you have the top off-road truck in the mid-sized class.
No. 2 – The Ford F-150 Raptors Add Speed and Power to Off-Roading

Back in 2010, the Ford F-150 Raptor was introduced to the world and the world of factory-built off-road trucks was reinvented. While plenty of half-ton trucks were perfectly capable in the dirt, the Raptor took it to the next level, coming with a suspension system and tires to let the V8-powered F-150 tear through the mud. After two different naturally aspirated V8 engines helped to make the Raptor so popular, the newest era of the Raptor moved to a high performance EcoBoost V6.
Today, that twin turbocharged V6 offers 450 horsepower and 510lb-ft of torque, making it the quickest Raptor to date. Key off-road features include the class-exclusive five-link rear suspension, FOX Live Valve shocks,a heavy duty four-wheel-drive system with a Hi-Lock Transfer Case, a widened body and stance with standard 35-inch off-road rubber and plenty of underbody skid plates.
In 2022, the Ford F-150 Raptor R was introduced as an answer to the Ram 1500 TRX. The Raptor R replaced the 3.5L V6 for a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, delivering 700 horsepower and 640lb-ft of torque. Those power levels made it the most powerful F-150 ever, but it still trailed the Ram 1500 TRX, but Ford fixed that in 2024 by increasing the output of the Carnivore V8 to 720 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque – making it the most powerful truck in the half-ton world. In addition to all of that power and the widened Raptor body, the R features Fox Dual Live Valve Shocks, a Multilink Rear Suspension setup, 37-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires on beadlock capable wheels and an array of skid plates to protect the underbody at high speeds.
If you want a half-ton that is great off-road, the Ford F-150 Raptor can do that job. If you want an off-road truck that is very fast on any surface, the Raptor R is the truck for you.
No. 1 – The Ram 1500 TRX and RHO Add Even More Speed and Power

The Ram 1500 TRX was introduced for the 2021 model year, answering the call for a Hellcat Hemi-powered half-ton. With 702 horsepower and 650lb-ft of torque, the original TRX was the most powerful production truck ever while also being engineered to dominate any off-road situation. To make it more than just a fast truck, the engineers added Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive Shocks with remote reservoirs, a Heavy-Duty Five-Link Rear Suspension setup, a specially reinforced frame, a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a high-performance active transfer case, an Electronic Locking Rear Differential, and 35-inch all terrain tires on beadlock capable wheels to make it the most capable off-road truck in the segment.
When the Ram 1500 TRX went out of production in the 2025 model year, the Ram 1500 RHO was introduced as the brand’s off-road performance truck. The high output Hurricane inline-six offers 540 horsepower and 521lb-ft of torque, making it more powerful and quicker than the Ford F-150 Raptor V6 models, while a similar suspension, chassis, and wheel-and-tire package to that found on the TRX affords the RHO incredible off-roading capabilities.
Finally, for the 2027 model year, the Ram 1500 TRX is back with the supercharged Hemi V8, now offering an astonishing 777 horsepower and 680lb-ft of torque. Those numbers make the new TRX is the quickest and most powerful half-ton production truck ever. A suspension, chassis, and tire setup similar to the one on the RHO make the world’s most powerful half-ton truck (with a combustion engine) one of the best in any off-road setting. Add in the many premium features that are offered with the TRX and you have the best of our top five off-road trucks.
