The build pairs their Megazilla 2.0 crate engine with a heavily modified Bronco to create an “outrageous” and “over-the-top” showcase for their racing parts division. With the Frostwarden and other custom builds on display at SEMA, Ford looks to showcase their customization and racing parts divisions and position themselves as a premier outlet for customers looking to create custom builds. ## Megazilla 2.0 Unleashed ![]() Megazilla 2.0 sits in the engine bay (Photo courtesy of Ford Motor Company) The Frostwarden Bronco is the first use of the Megazilla 2.0 V8 crate engine for Ford. It features a 3.0L Whipple supercharger, a stronger block than its predecessor, a purpose-built camshaft, upgraded pistons, larger fuel injectors, and a modified belt drive and damper. Ford says this results in “the most powerful crate engine ever created by an automaker,” with the Megazilla 2.0 producing over 1,200 horsepower and over 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque. With numbers like those the power plant seems to live up to its monstrous name. ## An Enthusiast’s Dream ![]() Frostwarden below the Misty Mountains (Photo courtesy of Ford Motor Company) Michael Goodwin of Ford Racing Parts is known as the “father of Megazilla 2.0” and was one of Frostwarden’s developers. Goodwin said, “Projects like Frostwarden work because the people behind them are enthusiasts themselves.” Goodwin was behind the initial pitch for the build after years of talk about creating a V-8 powered Bronco. “Frostwarden brings together people who know their piece of the build deeply, then asks us to solve the larger challenge together: how to turn a 1,200-horsepower crate engine into a complete vehicle that feels as intentional as it is extreme.” ## “Bigger, Louder, All In” ![]() Kitted out for search and rescue (Photo courtesy of Ford Motor Company) The Megazilla 2.0 was an engine in need of a vehicle, and Goodwin felt the Bronco was the right choice. The idea was to create an Arctic search-and-rescue rig; something “built for places where ordinary equipment would not be enough.” Having lived near the Arctic communities of Alaska, this writer can state that Frostwarden definitely looks ready for some serious overland duty, albeit with the substitution of some studded tires. The builders paired the Megazilla 2.0 with a Tremec 10R100 10-speed transmission and custom Dana front and rear ends. It rides on on 42-inch BF Goodrich tires wrapped around 18-inch Weld beadlockers, 74Weld portal gear lifts, and custom Bilsteins. The truck was built at Kincer Chassis. ## Return On Investment ![]() Into the woods and down the trail (Photo courtesy of Ford Motor Company) Building a halo vehicle like the Frostwarden might seem like a good way for Ford to spend money without any expectation of return on investment. However, Goodwin points out that the intent was to showcase what customers and builders can do with the parts and engines being offered by Ford. The real returns are in what Frostwarden inspires future builders to take on. According to Goodwin, “Ford does not just make vehicles that people customize. We are building the engines, parts, engineering knowledge and support that help enthusiasts take an idea further.” It’s hard to imagine going further than Frostwarden, but we look forward to seeing people try. ## Related vehicle coverage -
