NAPA XcceleratoR promises to get new technicians doing billable work in weeks rather than years. If there are going to be enough technicians to keep cars and trucks on the road going forward, a tool that could expedite training would theoretically be worth its weight in gold. At least that’s what NAPA claims for its AI-assisted training suite, and Pickup Truck + SUV Talk got up close and personal with it in New York City.

## How NAPA XcceleratoR aims to train technicians faster

Broken down into its basic parts, the NAPA XcceleratoR system consists of three primary elements: The first is XR Training Goggles, based on the Meta Quest series of consumer VR goggles and running proprietary software co-developed by NAPA and its technical partners at Skillmaker.AI. The second piece is a set of wearable Smart Glasses, and it’s all tied together by the third element, the XcceleratoR companion smartphone app.

Behind the system is Robin Cowie, who produced the 1999 independent horror film *The Blair Witch Project* and later worked on EA Sports’ *Madden NFL* series. Cowie went on to found [Skillmaker.ai](<https://skillmaker.ai/>), a firm that takes immersive technology and applies it to vocational training.

By turning the tedious rigor of automotive technician training into a video game with real-world rewards, NAPA says XcceleratoR can expedite onboarding dramatically. Its [Accelerate program](<https://napaxccelerator.com/accelerate>) targets the core 30% of skills that drive most billable work, with a claimed completion time of about 25 days. It sounds like witchcraft, or like an AI-forward gimmick. The important distinction is that this is NAPA’s claim about core skills, not a promise to turn a novice into a master mechanic in a month.

## Training with XR goggles and smart glasses

To understand how NAPA claims XcceleratoR pulls off this compressed timeline, you have to look at its three-stage framework: Assess, Accelerate and Assist. It all starts with those Meta Quest-based XR training goggles. Before a new hire ever lays hands on a customer’s truck, shop managers and vocational instructors can run them through a 45- to 60-minute virtual job assessment inside the headset.

The “Assess” phase evaluates baseline skills against ASE-aligned standards. From there, the “Accelerate” phase can begin, where the XR goggles do the heavy lifting of vocational training while instructors provide supplemental hands-on instruction that no machine can replicate. NAPA lists 53 ASE-aligned lessons across eight service areas and says the system works alongside, rather than replaces, instructor-led training. ASE alignment is not the same as earning ASE certification.

Then the “Assist” portion commences, where audio-enabled smart glasses provide voice-driven, hands-free access to repair information. Through the glasses and companion app, the system draws on NAPA training material and vehicle-specific information from partners including Identifix and AutoVitals. [Solera describes Direct-Hit XR](<https://www.solera.com/blog/2026/08/05/solera-napa-and-skillmaker-launch-direct-hit-xr-the-industrys-first-ask-and-answer-smart-glasses-solution-for-automotive-technicians/>) as a way to bring Identifix’s technician-confirmed repair information to the vehicle. The idea is less time stepping away from the lift to look something up, not a replacement for a technician’s judgment.

## What it means for training truck technicians

In a [March 2026 post](<https://www.americandieseloutfitters.com/steves-blog/the-diesel-technician-shortage-in-2026>), recruitment and technical consulting firm American Diesel Outfitters cited figures of 65.5% of diesel shops being understaffed and 19.3% of diesel technician roles being unfilled. Those figures describe the broader staffing problem, not a measured result of using XcceleratoR. Niche-specific rigors such as diesel emissions systems, heavy-duty suspension work and commercial-grade electrical systems require specialized expertise.

In a truck and SUV segment where vehicles earn money for their owners, keeping downtime to a minimum is the lifeblood of a repair shop. Training new hires also takes time away from experienced technicians. That is the bottleneck XcceleratoR aims to ease. It fits into the broader question we’ve been following: [how AI and software will change truck repair](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2026/07/who-will-control-the-future-of-truck-repair-im-going-to-germany-to-find-out/>).

With part specifications, torque specifications and diagnostic guidance available through audio, the goal is more time wrenching and less time walking back and forth to a terminal. NAPA XcceleratoR touts itself as a practical response to the technician shortage. For truck shops, the test will be whether faster access to information translates into accurate repairs and better-trained technicians.

## NAPA XcceleratoR pricing and availability

If you’re a shop manager or fleet director looking to overhaul your training pipeline, NAPA offers several subscription packages. Its [published pricing](<https://napaxccelerator.com/pricing>) lists the single-technician package at $3,000 paid upfront for the first year. That total includes $800 in hardware and a $2,200 annual license, with one XR headset and one pair of smart glasses.

The monthly option is $800 upfront for hardware plus 12 payments of $225, totaling $3,500 in the first year. After that, the single-technician license renews at $2,200 annually or $225 monthly. The shop package serves up to three technicians and costs $6,000 upfront for the first year, with one headset, three pairs of smart glasses and three licenses. Three of those packages would cost $18,000 before any applicable discounts. Whether that investment pays off depends on the shop’s workload and results, not just the promise of faster training.

NAPA says the full 53-lesson catalog is scheduled for release Nov. 3, 2026, including the engine and fluids and vehicle diagnostics lessons. Solera also lists Nov. 3 as the planned full commercial launch of Direct-Hit XR at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Shop owners should confirm current availability, package contents and renewal terms with NAPA before ordering.
