# Tesla Cybertruck dead: Controversial pickup axed for Cybercab

Tesla’s controversial Cybertruck is on its way out, ending a short, headline-grabbing run for the angular pickup that struggled to turn attention into sustained sales. CEO Elon Musk says Tesla will wind down production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of 2027 to make room for more Cybercabs. Musk confirmed the truck’s discontinuation in a follow-up exchange on X.

[CNBC reports](<https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/06/tesla-cybertruck-texas-musk.html>) that Musk outlined the change on X, then responded to a post mourning the truck’s end. The decision puts an expiration date on a pickup that began reaching customers in late 2023.

## Cybertruck dead: Musk’s follow-up makes it clear

Musk’s [initial announcement](<https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2118591788701421573>) specified the Texas factory and the approximate timing. He said the space would support increased Cybercab production.

Then came the exchange that matters. As [Business Insider reports](<https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-wind-down-cybertruck-production-elon-musk-cybercab-texas-2026-11>), Musk responded to a post describing the Cybertruck as discontinued.

“True, but the Cybertruck fleet will be around for a long time,” Musk wrote in his [reply](<https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2118628806277951825>).

That response supports calling this the end of the Cybertruck. The timing still matters: Musk described a wind-down around mid-2027, not an immediate halt. He did not announce a specific last day of production in those posts.

## Sales never matched the attention

![Tesla Cybertruck parked outside the Fremont factory in November 2023](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/Tesla-Cybertruck-at-Fremont-in-November-2023-edited.jpg.webp>)

The Cybertruck generated plenty of headlines, but its sales fell sharply after its first full year. [Cox Automotive’s Kelley Blue Book estimates](<https://www.coxautoinc.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Q4-2025-Kelley-Blue-Book-EV-Sales-Report.pdf>) put U.S. Cybertruck sales at 20,237 in 2025, down 48.1% from 38,965 in 2024.

Those are estimates, rather than a Cybertruck-specific delivery total released by Tesla. They nevertheless show how far demand dropped in just one year.

Production uncertainty also predates this announcement. We covered [a three-day Cybertruck production pause in December 2024](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2024/12/tesla-cybertruck-production-halted-for-three-days-future-unknown/>). The truck later faced a [2025 recall over exterior trim that could detach](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2025/03/all-tesla-cybertrucks-recalled-over-glued-on-trim-panel/>).

## Tesla is making room for Cybercab

Musk’s stated reason for the wind-down is factory space for Cybercab. That fits the direction Tesla described in its [third-quarter 2026 update](<https://ir.tesla.com/_flysystem/s3/sec/000162828026066738/tsla-20261021-gen.pdf>): the company said it began providing Robotaxi rides using Cybercabs in Austin on September 3.

The same update listed installed annual capacity above 125,000 vehicles each for Cybertruck and Cybercab in Texas. Installed capacity is not the same as actual production or sales, but it shows the scale of the factory investment behind these programs.

## What this means for truck buyers

For owners, Musk’s comment acknowledges that existing Cybertrucks will remain on the road. It does not, by itself, provide a detailed timetable for future parts availability, service or software support.

For shoppers, the key date is around mid-2027. Anyone considering a new Cybertruck should confirm delivery timing and support terms before buying. An announcement about the end of production is no guarantee of a discount or future collector value.

The Cybertruck attracted attention unlike almost any other pickup. Tesla is now choosing to put that factory space behind its robotaxi business.
