# Ram 2500 Black Express vs Rebel Lunar: How much truck do you really need?

The 2026 Ram 2500 Black Express and Rebel Lunar Edition approach the same heavy-duty platform from different directions. I sampled a Cummins-powered Black Express during a short trip to a Ram event in Detroit, then walked around a richly equipped Rebel Lunar Edition with the diesel as well.

The Rebel's price pushed toward $95,000, which makes the question fairly obvious: which additions improve the truck for your use, and which simply make it look and feel more expensive? These were separate, brief reviews. I did not tow a common trailer with both or drive them over the same off-road course.

## Black Express dresses up a work-truck foundation

The Black Express starts from the Tradesman side of the lineup. The truck I reviewed had body-color bumpers, dark wheels and trim, and a cabin that retained the practical character of a work truck. It offered a way to change the appearance without immediately moving into the most elaborate interior.

I appreciated its running boards because getting into a heavy-duty pickup is already a climb for me. That practical benefit matters more than the name attached to the package. The trailer mirrors also stood out, especially the ability to adjust the lower convex section without reaching outside and smudging it.

The Rebel Lunar had a different presentation, with distinctive exterior graphics and interior stitching. Its Rebel equipment added a stronger off-road emphasis, including skid protection and a rear electronic locking differential.

Those are separate reasons to spend money. Styling can be worth paying for if you enjoy it, while underbody protection and traction equipment should be tied to where the truck will actually go. One should not be mistaken for the other.

## Diesel capability does not require the most expensive cabin

Both trucks in these videos had Cummins diesel power. That matters because the cheaper-looking interior does not mean the Black Express is merely an appearance-focused light-duty truck. It remains a Ram 2500 whose capability depends on its actual configuration.

The Black Express's payload label showed 3,149 pounds during my walkaround. That number belongs to the vehicle I drove. It should not be used as a promise for every Black Express, because engine, drivetrain, options and other configuration choices change the result.

The Rebel video discussed substantial towing capability, but a headline maximum is not enough to plan a purchase. The buyer needs the ratings for the particular truck and must account for passengers, cargo and trailer tongue or pin weight.

I would choose the engine and configuration around the work first. Then I would decide whether I needed the Rebel's additional equipment. A higher sticker price does not automatically mean more usable payload for the job you have in mind.

## The interior difference is easy to see

The Black Express had cloth seating, a manually adjusted driver's seat and a front bench arrangement. I liked the straightforward materials for a truck that might get dirty. It also had useful technology, including its central display and the digital rearview mirror in the vehicle I sampled.

The Rebel Lunar's cabin brought a larger, more elaborate presentation. Its prominent center display, passenger screen, branded details and contrasting stitching were immediately visible. The adjustable center-console storage was a practical feature amid those upgrades.

I was less enthusiastic about the passenger screen because my experience with that feature in other Ram products had been mixed. A shopper should try it with the person who will use it rather than assume that another screen always adds value.

The right cabin depends on the owner. Someone who spends long days in a truck may value the extra comfort and equipment. Someone who prefers simpler materials and a bench seat may find the Black Express closer to the desired specification without feeling shortchanged.

## Inspect the small work details before paying for the package

Rebel Lunar bed and RamBox layout, left, and the Black Express bed, right. Screenshots: Tim Esterdahl / PUTT.

The Black Express's bed was relatively basic in the reviewed configuration, without a spray-in liner or bed lighting. Its tailgate was not damped. I also found the deployable bed step awkward because the available space did not comfortably accommodate my shoe. Try that kind of feature with your normal work boots.

The Rebel I showed had RamBox storage and additional bed features. These can be useful, but they also mean checking that the remaining bed layout works with your cargo and accessories. More compartments do not automatically make every loading job easier.

My Black Express drive was brief, including highway and city use in cold weather. I liked the ride for a heavy-duty pickup, but its displayed fuel-economy history included driving by other journalists. It was not a measured result from my own controlled test. The Rebel video was primarily a walkaround.

My starting point would be the simplest Ram 2500 that meets the job, then an honest look at the upgrades. The Black Express makes sense for someone who wants a more distinctive work-truck appearance. The Rebel Lunar is a more specialized and expensive choice for someone who will value its equipment and presentation. Neither brief video settles long-term reliability.
