# GM Is Killing Well-Known Apps for 2027: What You Need to Know

The new OnStar app will replace myChevrolet, myGMC, myBuick and myCadillac starting in 2027. For truck and SUV owners, the immediate questions are practical: Will remote start still work, will another login be necessary and will the switch cost more?

[GM-Trucks.com highlighted the change in an Oct. 21 report by Zane Merva](<https://www.gm-trucks.com/mychevrolet-mygmc-apps-replaced-onstar/>). GM confirmed the replacement plan in its [GM Forward announcement](<https://news.gm.com/home.detail.html/Pages/news/us/en/2026/oct/1021-gm-forward-2026.html>). The company has described the new features, but it has not supplied a complete owner migration guide.

## Which apps are going away, and when?

![Archive promotional image showing the OnStar Guardian app on four phones](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/OnStar-Guardian-App-02.jpg>)

The existing OnStar Guardian app is also part of the replacement plan. This archive image does not show the new 2027 app. Image courtesy of General Motors.

GM says the replacement covers the four vehicle-brand apps and OnStar Guardian. Its stated rollout begins in 2027, without an announced month, brand-by-brand schedule or final shutdown date for each existing app.

That leaves some important setup questions unanswered. The announcement does not say whether the change will arrive as an update or a separate download, whether owners must sign in again, or how saved preferences and vehicle access will transfer. A new app name is not evidence that customers need a new account.

For now, keep using the app you have. There is no reason to delete it or create a replacement account based on this announcement alone. Wait for GM’s specific transition instructions.

## Remote commands remain part of the new OnStar app

OnStar’s [official Connected Intelligence page](<https://www.onstar.com/features/connected-intelligence>) specifically includes remote commands and vehicle status in the new app. GM’s [current connected-services guide](<https://news.gm.com/home.detail.html/Pages/topic/us/en/2026/sep/0925-onstar-guide.html>) describes familiar functions such as remote start, locking and unlocking, fuel or charge checks, tire pressures and oil-life information.

The announced app replacement is not an announcement that those everyday functions are being removed. However, the materials do not provide a model-by-model feature comparison. Owners should not read a general product preview as a promise that every truck gains every capability. PUTT’s [2025 reporting on OnStar’s cabin-temperature controls](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2025/11/gm-truck-suv-owners-lose-onstar-cabin-temperature-feature-thanks-to-software-goof/>) documented why vehicle-specific compatibility matters.

OnStar also plans to integrate its AI Assistant into the app for vehicle-specific help away from the driver’s seat. Connected Cameras is another planned addition. GM describes automatic incident recordings, phone alerts and live camera viewing. Having a surround-view camera system today does not, by itself, establish eligibility. GM has not provided a complete compatible-vehicle list in these announcements.

## Family features and privacy controls need a closer look

In its [OnStar announcement](<https://news.gm.com/home.detail.html/Pages/news/us/en/2026/oct/1021-onstar-ai.html>), GM says OnStar Family will support sharing destinations, coordinating pickups and keeping track of family vehicles. Planned safety guidance will combine vehicle information with weather, road conditions and routes.

The company also says customers choose whether to activate features and can turn them off. Camera, microphone, location and AI permissions will have controls. GM says recordings will be encrypted and time-limited, and that GM cannot access Connected Camera recordings. Those are the company’s announced privacy commitments, not the results of an independent test.

GM already offers [Family Sharing through individual accounts](<https://experience.gm.com/support/account/profile-account-security/how-to-use-family-sharing>), without sharing the owner’s sign-in or security PIN. The 2027 materials do not explain how existing family groups will migrate. Keep that separate from the new features being previewed.

## What will it cost, and what should owners do now?

GM has not announced a new-app price list or specific charges for Connected Cameras and OnStar Family in these materials. It also has not announced a subscription-price change caused by replacing the brand apps. Do not assume the new extras will be free, or that a new app automatically means a new bill.

There is an existing baseline: [OnStar currently advertises Basics for up to eight years on eligible 2025-and-newer vehicles](<https://www.onstar.com/trial>). That is separate from shorter trials for other services. It is not confirmation that every feature shown for 2027 will be included.

Check the [Plans & Services section of your GM account](<https://experience.gm.com/support/account/plans-services/troubleshooting>) and note the included terms for your vehicle. Our [guide to vehicle subscriptions](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2024/01/the-truth-about-subscription-fees-in-your-vehicle/>) explains why the service and its trial period matter more than the app’s name.

The bottom line: one app could make a mixed Chevrolet-and-GMC driveway easier to manage. What owners need next is a clear migration process, vehicle eligibility and pricing. Until those details arrive, keep the working app and avoid treating a preview as a guarantee.
