# F-150 Lobo vs Maverick Lobo: The same name, two different street trucks

Ford has put the Lobo name on two very different pickups. I drove the 2025 Maverick Lobo, then toured a 2026 F-150 Lobo at the Houston Auto Show. The compact truck emphasized handling changes and a distinctive personality. The full-size truck added V8 sound and street-truck styling to a much larger package.

The Maverick I reviewed was approximately $42,000. The F-150 displayed at the show was $61,580 as equipped. This comparison combines a road review with a static walkaround, so I can describe how the Maverick drove but cannot claim I tested the F-150’s handling in that video.

## The Maverick changes more than its appearance

The Maverick Lobo has lowered, sport-tuned suspension and a different transmission arrangement from other EcoBoost Mavericks. Its torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system and dedicated Lobo mode help establish a personality that goes beyond badges and wheels.

On the road, I found the transmission smooth and unobtrusive in normal operation. The ride was firmer than a regular Maverick’s, but it did not make commuting unpleasant. Visibility was good, and the engine felt responsive enough for everyday use.

Lobo mode changes the behavior further, but its closed-course purpose is different from commuting. Normal mode was the better choice for ordinary driving because the transmission was less inclined to hold a gear. A buyer should decide how much the specialized capability matters outside the excitement of a demonstration.

The F-150 Lobo’s show-floor appeal was more immediately about presence: a distinctive front end, lighting, large wheels, a lower stance and dual exhaust. That may be exactly the street-truck formula some shoppers want. My walkaround cannot establish how its ride compares with the Maverick.

## A V8 changes the appeal, and the size changes the job

The compact Maverick Lobo is turbocharged; the larger F-150 Lobo uses a V8. Maverick at left. (Ford reference photos)

The F-150 Lobo uses the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8. The truck on display had the visual attitude to go with that choice, and a V8 is a meaningful reason for an enthusiast to choose the full-size model.

The Maverick Lobo uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It is not a hybrid Maverick with an appearance package. Its seven-speed automatic and the rest of its specific hardware are central to what makes it different from the more basic compact pickup.

More engine is not the only difference. The F-150 occupies full-size-truck space, with the cab, bed and parking implications that come with it. A shopper who wants a compact commuter with an occasional open bed should decide whether moving up in size actually helps.

Conversely, someone who needs a full-size pickup should not assume the Maverick’s smaller dimensions are merely a convenience. Capacity, configuration and the intended loads still need to drive the purchase. The shared Lobo name does not make the trucks interchangeable.

## The F-150 puts more room and storage around its occupants

The F-150’s cabin impressed me with its storage. Its large center console, door pockets and folding rear-seat arrangement offered plenty of places for ordinary equipment. Raising the rear seat exposed a broad, flat load floor.

The show truck had cloth upholstery and a column-mounted shifter, leaving the center console useful for storage and its work surface. It was based on the STX rather than an expensive luxury trim, but it did not feel stripped of practical features.

At 5 feet 10 inches tall, I could sit behind my own driving position in the Maverick with reasonable space. Its smaller size did not make the rear seat unusable. The one-piece rear-seat cushion did complicate access to the under-seat storage when passengers or a child seat occupied that area.

The Maverick also had a large central touchscreen, numerous small storage areas and distinctive Lobo upholstery details. I questioned how much hard plastic remained at the reviewed price. Equipment and colorful stitching do not automatically make a cabin feel like a luxury vehicle.

## Buy the truck you need before paying for the personality

The Maverick Lobo’s towing limit is 2,000 pounds. The larger towing number available on appropriately equipped Mavericks should not be transferred to this trim. My review also called attention to the relatively modest payload of the particular Lobo I drove.

Those limits were part of my concern about value at approximately $42,000. It was fun, and it had a distinct character, but someone primarily buying a pickup to carry or tow may be better served by a different Maverick configuration. Check the specific payload label rather than borrowing a maximum from a different version.

The roughly $61,580 F-150 show truck asked substantially more money while providing a different size, engine and configuration. Its actual towing and payload limits need to be checked for the individual vehicle. A V8 badge is not a substitute for those numbers.

For an enthusiast who wants a compact street truck and accepts its limits, the Maverick Lobo offers a compelling personality. The F-150 Lobo is for the buyer who wants the full-size format and V8 character. My advice is to choose the size and capability first, then decide whether the Lobo treatment is worth the additional cost.

Based on Cory’s [Maverick Lobo road review](<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmEW3GerDUg>) and [F-150 Lobo Houston Auto Show walkaround](<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-UK5Q7_rZU>). Both videos include ScreenProTech promotions. The Lobo towing limit is confirmed in [Ford’s technical specifications](<https://www.fromtheroad.ford.com/content/dam/fordmediasite/us/en/library/2025/specs/2025-Ford-Maverick-and-Lobo-Technical-Specs.pdf>).
