# Duramax Oil Cooler Lawsuit Targets Silverado, Sierra HD Trucks

A Duramax oil cooler lawsuit accuses General Motors of selling heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups with cooling-system components that can fail and leave owners facing major engine repairs. One Idaho owner says he received a $41,319.79 repair quote after trouble developed at about 16,453 miles.

Robert Hubof filed the proposed class action against General Motors LLC on Sept. 24, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The case is [Hubof v. General Motors LLC, No. 2:26-cv-13622](<https://www.classaction.org/media/hubof-v-general-motors-llc.pdf>). We reviewed the filed complaint, including its vehicle definition and the account of Hubof’s truck.

The filing presents the plaintiff’s allegations. It seeks class certification and relief from the court; it does not establish a defect, GM’s liability or an entitlement to compensation.

## Which trucks does the Duramax oil cooler lawsuit target?

The proposed nationwide class covers U.S. buyers and lessees, other than those buying for resale, of 2024-2026 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD and GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks equipped with the 6.6-liter L5P Duramax turbo-diesel V-8. The filing also proposes an Idaho class.

There is an important qualification for 2027. Paragraph 130 includes those model-year trucks only to the extent they use the same or a substantially similar L5P oil-cooler assembly or design. The plaintiff reserves the right to change that definition after obtaining production dates, part numbers and engineering information through discovery.

That is narrower than saying every 2027 Silverado HD or Sierra HD is affected. It also does not describe the 3.0-liter Duramax in GM’s light-duty trucks or GM’s gasoline engines.

## What allegedly fails, and what happened to the owner?

The engine oil cooler uses coolant to carry heat away from lubricating oil while keeping the two fluids separate. The complaint alleges that the cooler cannot withstand normal operating pressures, temperatures, vibration and thermal cycling. A crack or other failure can allow oil into the cooling system or outside the truck, the filing says.

Hubof alleges that the resulting loss of lubrication and contamination can lead to overheating, power loss, engine seizure and extensive repairs. He also alleges that replacement coolers can share the same defect and that parts backorders have prolonged repair delays. Those claims have not been established by the filing itself.

According to paragraphs 23-28, Hubof bought a new 2024 Silverado 2500HD in December 2023. In June 2025, at about 16,453 miles, he noticed a low-oil light and added approximately seven quarts. A few days later, he says, he heard a bang and found oil in the coolant reservoir and leaking beneath the truck.

The complaint says a dealership technician found oil contamination in the cooling system, no oil showing on the dipstick and metal debris in the oiling system. Hubof alleges the truck was not repaired under warranty and he received the $41,319.79 quote. That figure is an alleged estimate for his truck, not a typical repair cost or a court award. The complaint says the vehicle remained unusable when filed.

## What GM’s coolant-contamination bulletin actually says

Silverado HD from PUTT’s archive. Vehicle involvement in a GM service update must be checked by VIN. Photo by Tim Esterdahl.

GM’s [Service Update N232430450](<https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2024/MC-11006368-0001.pdf>), released Aug. 14, 2024, independently confirms that coolant contamination was a service concern on certain 2024 Silverado HD and Sierra HD trucks with the L5P engine.

The bulletin directs dealers to check vehicle involvement in GM’s warranty system, inspect the radiator surge tank and arrange repairs if contamination is visible. It applies to specified vehicles, including customer vehicles returning to dealerships, and states that it expires at the end of the involved vehicle’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty period.

The plaintiff cites GM’s service information as support for his allegation that the company knew about the problem. The bulletin itself does not establish the complaint’s broader claim of a defective oil-cooler design across the proposed model-year range. It is labeled a service update, not a safety recall.

The lawsuit also disputes GM’s warranty handling, alleging that some owners are blamed for insufficient oil maintenance or receive cooler replacement and flushing when more extensive repairs are needed. We have not obtained a response from GM for this article.

## What owners should understand about this case

Hubof asks the court to certify a class, award damages and require measures including a repair program and reassessment of denied warranty claims. Those are requests, not remedies already ordered. The complaint is not a settlement notice or a recall announcement.

Owners comparing their trucks with the proposed class should verify the model year, HD series and engine, rather than relying on the Duramax name alone. If a truck has experienced a problem, repair orders, diagnostic findings, maintenance records, warranty decisions and receipts provide a clearer record of what happened than a model-name match. A dealer can check whether a VIN is included in the documented service update.

This case is separate from our coverage of [GM’s older Duramax CP4 fuel-pump litigation](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2023/05/class-action-status-gm-defective-fuel-pumps/>). Those allegations concern a fuel-system component and earlier trucks. It is also separate from the [5.3-liter Vortec gasoline-engine oil-consumption case](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2025/10/gm-5-3l-v8-vortec-oil-consumtion-class-action-lawsuit-settled-lawyers-cash-in/>). Similar repair-cost concerns do not make them the same lawsuit.

For now, the useful distinction is between a documented service action for certain 2024 trucks and a proposed lawsuit seeking broader relief. The complaint makes serious allegations, but it does not resolve whether the claimed design defect exists or which owners a court might ultimately allow to proceed together.
