# 3.0L Duramax Failures Near 5,000 Miles: What Owners Report

By Tim Esterdahl

Two reports of 3.0L Duramax failures near 5,000 miles show why a check engine light does not tell the whole story. One 2025 GMC Sierra owner describes an engine that stopped without warning. In another 2025 Sierra, a dealership employee reports finding a thrust bearing in the oil pan while the truck still ran.

[GM-Trucks.com highlighted these accounts](<https://www.gm-trucks.com/3-0l-duramax-thrust-bearing-p06dd/>) in an Oct. 21 report by Zane Merva. The original forum posts offer different clues, not a confirmed explanation for every LZ0 failure. A separate 2026 owner’s P06DD report adds an important counterpoint: that fault code does not automatically mean an engine needs replacing.

## One Sierra stopped without a warning light

Forum member [Jus Cruisin](<https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/276445-missing-thrust-bearing-and-oil-selection/?do=findComment&comment=2718086>) says a May 2025-built Sierra Denali Ultimate seized just under 5,000 miles. The [owner’s follow-up](<https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/276445-missing-thrust-bearing-and-oil-selection/?do=findComment&comment=2718095>) describes an abrupt shutdown, no warning light and a message to restart. It would not restart.

According to the owner, a technician could not turn the engine by hand, and GM approved replacement without a teardown. A [later update](<https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/276445-missing-thrust-bearing-and-oil-selection/?do=findComment&comment=2718103>) says the replacement had passed 10,000 miles and was running well.

That account establishes what the owner says happened, not which internal part failed. Without teardown findings, calling this a confirmed thrust-bearing failure would go beyond the evidence.

## Another truck arrived running, but the oil told a different story

Member [newdude’s dealership-side account](<https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/276445-missing-thrust-bearing-and-oil-selection/?do=findComment&comment=2718071>) concerns a customer’s Sierra, not the member’s own truck. At just over 5,000 miles, it arrived for an oil change with a check engine light and P06DD. The member reports metal in the oil, filter and lower pan, where a thrust bearing was found.

The member says inspection stopped at the pan. Suggested assembly or machining explanations were guesses, not teardown conclusions. The post does not establish a completed engine replacement.

PUTT previously covered a [separate LZ0 teardown that raised missing-bearing questions](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2026/06/missing-thrust-bearing-lz0-duramax-failures/>). These reports warrant attention, but matching symptoms or a shared engine name do not establish the same cause. Neither account provides the information needed to calculate how often this happens across all LZ0 engines.

## P06DD did not bring the same diagnosis for a 2026 owner

![White GMC Sierra 1500 driving on a dirt road](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/2025_gmc_sierra-1500_crew-cab-pickup_at4_fq_oem_1_1280.webp>)

In a [separate original post](<https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/276377-lz0-p06dd-code-not-thrust-bearing-related/>), member coreydkoster describes a 2026 Sierra Denali with a check engine light, reduced-acceleration message and P06DD at 500 miles. The owner says the dealer found crankshaft end play within specification and no excessive metal in the oil.

The dealer planned to replace the oil control valve solenoid, according to that post. It is a proposed repair, not a verified report that the repair was completed or resolved the issue.

That distinction matters when comparing 3.0L Duramax failures online. A code can guide diagnosis, but it is not a substitute for the measurements and inspection findings on the individual truck.

## What 3.0L Duramax owners can take from these reports

![Standalone 3.0-liter LZ0 Duramax inline-six diesel engine](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2023-Silverado-3.0L-Diesel-Duramax_Front-Right.jpg>)

GM’s second-generation 3.0-liter Duramax, shown in a manufacturer image. Photo courtesy of General Motors.

Start with the warning on your own truck, not a diagnosis borrowed from a forum. The [2025 GMC Sierra owner’s manual](<https://contentdelivery.ext.gm.com/bypass/gma-content-api/resources/sites/GMA/content/staging/MANUALS/9000/MA9247/en_US/3.0/25_GMC_Sierra_Sierra_Denali_1500_OM_en_US_U_87855280B_2024OCT31_2P.pdf>) directs drivers who get an oil-pressure warning while driving to stop safely, shut off the engine and check the oil level. It also explains that pressure varies with engine speed, temperature and oil viscosity. A dashboard reading by itself is not a bearing diagnosis.

For a service visit, record the mileage, warnings and codes, and keep the repair order. Ask the shop to explain its oil-pressure and crankshaft end-play findings and whether it found metal contamination. Request the current GM service information applicable to your VIN rather than assuming a forum report proves your truck has the same problem.

These accounts concern the light-duty 3.0-liter LZ0. They are separate from the [6.6-liter Duramax oil-cooler lawsuit involving Silverado and Sierra HD trucks](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2026/10/duramax-oil-cooler-lawsuit-silverado-sierra-hd/>). The shared Duramax badge does not make them the same issue.

The bottom line: the reports deserve scrutiny, but they do not establish a fleet-wide failure rate or a common cause. The most useful next step for an affected owner is a documented diagnosis, not assuming every P06DD code means a new engine.
