The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD Terrain Mode brings one-pedal off-road control to the HD ZR2. Press the accelerator to move forward, then ease off and the truck applies braking to help manage its speed over an obstacle.

That sounds simple, but how does it work when a heavy-duty pickup is climbing over rocks? In our Tucson demonstration video, I asked engineer Ben Hogan to explain what the system changes, how it differs from Off-Road Mode and what happens when the brakes start building heat.

## Terrain Mode helps control speed over obstacles

Hogan explains that Chevrolet brought Terrain Mode to the HD ZR2 from its light-duty and midsize trucks. The goal is to make it easier to place the truck where the driver wants it on a technical trail.

The accelerator handles the request to speed up. Lifting off brings in braking to slow the truck, reducing the need to move repeatedly between the accelerator and brake during low-speed maneuvers. Hogan says the system also works with traction control to limit wheel slip.

GM’s [published description of the HD system](<https://news.gm.com/home.detail.html/Pages/news/us/en/2026/sep/0924-heavy-duty-duramax-83l-turbo-diesel-v8-engine.html>) confirms that lifting off the accelerator automatically applies braking. The driver still needs to watch the trail, choose a line and remain ready to use the brake. One-pedal operation is a control aid, not a reason to assume the truck will handle every situation.

## Off-Road Mode takes a different approach

Terrain Mode and Off-Road Mode are separate choices. Hogan describes Off-Road Mode as the broader setting for off-pavement driving, including faster travel on an appropriate dirt road. It does not provide Terrain Mode’s one-pedal function.

A driver can still use Off-Road Mode around obstacles, but speed control follows the more familiar accelerator-and-brake approach. That may suit someone who prefers managing both pedals rather than having braking come in as the accelerator is released.

The choice comes down to the trail and how the driver wants the truck to respond. Terrain Mode is aimed at controlled progress over technical sections; Off-Road Mode retains a more conventional pedal response.

## Four-high, four-low and the shifter change the response

The HD system works in both four-high and four-low. Hogan says the demonstration uses four-low, with a more aggressive rock-crawling calibration for precise positioning. This is the new HD ZR2 system, so owners should not assume the same operating details apply to an older Silverado 1500.

There is another adjustment beyond selecting the drive mode. Hogan explains that lower selections on the transmission shifter increase the braking response when the driver lifts off the accelerator. He identifies L1 as the most aggressive setting for precise rock crawling.

That gives the driver a way to change how quickly the truck slows while approaching the top of a rock or working through an obstacle. The shifter, rather than the cruise control switch, is the control Hogan identifies for changing that response.

## What about brake heat?

More automatic brake application raises an obvious question: What happens to brake temperatures? Hogan acknowledges that Terrain Mode can put more heat into the brakes than ordinary Off-Road Mode.

He says the system is calibrated to manage brake temperatures and includes brake-temperature protections. That explanation addresses how Chevrolet has accounted for heat in the controls; it is not a promise of zero brake wear or unlimited use under every condition.

Chevrolet’s [2027 Silverado HD information](<https://www.chevrolet.com/upcoming-vehicles/2027-silverado-hd>) also identifies the truck’s new eBoost braking as part of the hardware that enables Terrain Mode.
