# 2026 Land Rover Defender OCTA review: More than a $160K off-roader

My 2026 Land Rover Defender OCTA review started with a pretty obvious question: What do you get for about $160,000? After a week behind the wheel, the answer surprised me. There is plenty of off-road hardware, as you would expect, but the comfortable ride and useful little features made just as much of an impression.

My week included shorter drives around Nebraska and time on dirt roads, not an extreme off-road test. You can see the equipment walkthrough and driving impressions in [my Defender OCTA video review](<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUir_jCukw8>).

## A twin-turbo V8 and suspension that surprised me

Under the hood is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with mild-hybrid assistance, making 626 horsepower. [Land Rover quotes a 3.8-second run to 60 mph](<https://www.landroverusa.com/defender/defender-octa/index.html>). That is the manufacturer’s figure, not a timed result from my test, but it tells you what kind of SUV this is supposed to be.

The other big piece is the 6D Dynamics suspension. Hydraulically linked dampers help manage body roll and pitching while retaining the wheel movement needed off-road. You can spend a lot of time reading about the hardware. What mattered to me was how comfortable the vehicle felt when I drove it.

There is also plenty to play with in the Dynamic settings, including adjustments for shifting and suspension. I tried the selectable exhaust sound for the video, too. Then there are the illuminated paddle shifters. Is that a small detail? Absolutely. I still thought it was fun. Combined with the joystick-like shifter, the controls gave the cabin a bit of a fighter-pilot feel.

## The off-road gear goes beyond the rugged look

The test vehicle wore Goodyear Wrangler tires, with a matching spare mounted on the back. There were substantial recovery points at both rear corners and another up front. I liked having clearly identifiable places to attach recovery equipment rather than having to hunt around underneath a luxury SUV.

At the rear, the trailer-hitch receiver and wiring connection were easy to find. The wiring sat away from the exhaust, something I pay attention to when looking over a tow setup. I did not tow with the OCTA during this review, so those are observations about the layout rather than a towing verdict.

Inside, the camera system lets you move among views around the vehicle, check the rear and hitch area, and use an under-vehicle view to help judge obstacles. I demonstrated the menus in my garage to keep glare off the screen. The amount of information available is impressive, particularly when you are trying to place the vehicle carefully.

The menus also include low-traction launch assistance and off-road information. Those aids could be welcome when a slippery surface makes a situation stressful. Even an experienced driver can appreciate some help when anxiety starts to build.

## Comfortable seats, good visibility and a cooler box

The front seats were a highlight. The adjustable bolsters held me securely, but the seats were still really comfortable. I also appreciated the visibility out of the upright cabin. An SUV can have all sorts of camera technology and still benefit from simply giving the driver a good view.

Then there is the cooler box in the center console. Turn it on and you have a place to keep a drink cool. I could immediately see the appeal in a hot desert environment, even though that was not where I tested this Defender. It is one of those features that sounds like a luxury extra until you imagine reaching for a cold drink after spending time outside.

The OCTA has plenty of screens and settings, but I kept coming back to those basic things: a comfortable seat, good visibility and useful storage. They are features you can appreciate without finding a difficult trail.

## The cargo area has some clever touches

The rear cargo area did not strike me as especially large. The organizer supplied with the vehicle did come in handy on a shopping trip, though. I used it for fruits and vegetables, and it kept those smaller items together.

I also liked being able to lower the rear for loading. I am a short guy, so bringing the cargo floor closer to the ground makes a difference. There were tie-down points, lighting, a 12-volt outlet and a household-style power outlet back there, too.

One unexpected discovery was the rear fan control. With the back open, I could feel air coming into that area. It got me thinking about an overlanding lunch stop: lower the rear, put up some shade and have some airflow while sitting out back. I could see that being handy in the American Southwest. It was a neat detail I had not expected to find.

## The road manners made this Defender memorable

On Nebraska dirt roads, the OCTA felt right at home. Out on the pavement, it was smoother and easier to drive than its boxy shape and rugged tires might suggest. It held its line without requiring a lot of small steering corrections from me.

Turning into spaces and going around corners, I was surprised by how sharply it responded. The combination of easy maneuvering and a comfortable ride impressed me.

It was fairly quiet, but not silent. I could hear the tires and some wind noise, which is part of the tradeoff with an upright, rugged-looking SUV. My drives were generally around town or roughly 30 to 45 minutes, rather than the three- or four-hour trips I sometimes make in Nebraska. I would have been happy to spend longer behind the wheel, although fuel costs would be on my mind.

The Defender’s mix of familiar off-road styling and comfort is not entirely new territory for us. Our earlier [Defender 110 SE review](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2022/01/2021-land-rover-defender-110-se-better-than-a-jeep-wrangler/>) also considered the Wrangler comparison. The OCTA adds a much more expensive, performance-focused take on that idea.

About $160,000 is a lot of money, and a week of driving does not answer every ownership question. What I can say is that I enjoyed this Defender more than I expected. The V8 and off-road equipment get your attention, but the ride, seats and everyday details are what kept winning me over. I will remember the OCTA name.
