The XLT and Big Horn are both designed to offer a combination of a relatively low price, a solid list of standard features and an array of options that includes some high-end items. With the F-150 getting some key changes for the 2027 model year, we wanted to take a look at how these two half-ton models compare to each other in the areas that matter most to buyers. ## Engine Choices ![]() Ford F-150 Chassis with the 5.0L V8 Engine (Image Courtesy of Ford Motor Company) The biggest news for the [2027 Ford F-150 XLT]() is the introduction of a new standard engine in the form of the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6. This engine offers the same 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque as the 2.7-liter mill that it replaces, but this new V6 offers more power in the lower RPM range, improving driving dynamics in the most common situations. Meanwhile, the standard engine for the 2027 Ram 1500 Big Horn is the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 with just 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque – so the F-150 has a massive advantage in terms of the standard engine comparison. The 2027 Ford F-150 XLT and 2027 Ram 1500 Big Horn are each offered with several optional engines and, in most cases, the truck wearing the Blue Oval has the advantage. In the battle of V8s, Ford’s 5.0-liter offers 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque compared to Ram’s Hemi with 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 offers 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque while the Ram’s 3.0-liter Hurricane delivers 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque, so the premium engine battle is kind of a draw. Finally, the F-150 is available with the 3.5-liter PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6 which delivers 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque, and while the Ram V6 and Hemi feature the eTorque mild hybrid system, it is not a legitimate comparison for the F-150 hybrid. The Ford hybrid offers far more power and functionality than the mild hybrid in the Ram. All F-150s come with the 10-speed automatic while all Ram 1500s come with the 8-speed automatic. The bottom line here is that if you want the most power from your new half-ton truck and you are considering the 2027 Ford F-150 XLT and the 2027 Ram 1500 Big Horn, Ford has the advantage in the standard engine and V8 comparison. Ford also has the advantage of the full hybrid truck, but when it comes to the premium engine options for the XLT and the Big Horn, you have to pick whether you want more horsepower or more torque. ## Towing and Payload ![]() Ram 1500 Big Horn Rear (Image Courtesy of Stellantis) After power, two of the most important figures for people who buy trucks to actually use them are towing and payload capacity. If you are shopping a 2027 Ford F-150 XLT against a 2027 Ram 1500 Big Horn and you are concerned about towing and hauling capacity, the odds are good that you are looking at the stronger engines. This includes the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and the 5.0-liter “Coyote” V8 in the Ford versus the 3.0-liter Hurricane I6 and the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 in the Ram. The Ford F-150 with the SuperCab configuration and the 3.5-liter EcoBoost can tow up to 10,900 pounds, while the 5.0-liter V8 will tow up to 10,500 pounds without the Max Towing package or 12,700 pounds with Max Towing. When you step up to the SuperCrew, the Max Towing package is available with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost, leading to a towing capacity of 13,500 pounds. The 2027 Ram 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab with the Hurricane can tow 11,610 pounds while the CrewCab models can tow up to 11,490 with the I6 or 11,320 with the Hemi. In terms of payload capacity, the 2027 Ford F-150 XLT with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine can haul up to 2,440 pounds while the V8 truck can haul up to 2,235 pounds. The I6-powered Ram 1500 Big Horn can haul 1,930 pounds while the Hemi can haul 1,650 pounds – giving the Ford an advantage with both of the premium engine options in both towing and payload capacities. ## Interior Features ![]() Ford F-150 XLT Interior (Image Courtesy of Ford Motor Company) The 2027 Ford F-150 XLT and the 2027 Ram 1500 Big Horn both come standard with cloth seats, and they both offer a black interior and an interior with some gray highlights. One key difference is that the Big Horn comes standard with a fixed center console between the front seats while the XLT comes with a 40/20/40 front seat, giving the Ford an advantage in seating capacity. You can upgrade to the center console in the Ford, but for those who want the extra seat, the F-150 has the edge while those who want the extra storage may prefer the Ram. One key point that will make a difference to music lovers is the standard and optional speaker systems in the F-150 XLT and Ram 1500 Big Horn. The Ford comes standard with a 12-inch infotainment screen and a seven-speaker sound system while the Ram comes with an 8.4-inch screen and a six-speaker sound system. However, the Ram’s popular equipment group adds a 12-inch screen and a nine-speaker system with a subwoofer, while the Ford popular equipment group does not upgrade the sound system. ## Exterior Choices ![]() Ram 1500 Big Horn Side Profile (Image Courtesy of Stellantis) The 2027 Ford F-150 XLT and 2027 Ram 1500 Big Horn are both offered with two different four-door cab options and two different bed size options. The XLT is offered with the SuperCab and the six-and-a-half-foot box while the SuperCrew is available with either the six-and-a-half-foot box or a five-and-a-half-foot box. The Big Horn is available with the Quad Cab and a bed that measures six feet, four inches while the larger CrewCab is available with the six-foot-four-inch box or a shorter 5-foot-7-inch box. These options give the Ram 1500 a slight advantage for shoppers who are looking at the smaller bed options, while the Ford has a small advantage between the two larger bed options. In terms of exterior features, the 2027 F-150 XLT is available with five wheel choices that vary based on the packages chosen, starting with a standard 17-inch wheel and moving through a spread of 18- and 20-inch wheel designs. The Ford is available in nine exterior colors – Agate Black Metallic, Carbonized Gray Metallic, Iconic Silver Metallic, Marsh Gray, Oxford White and Ruby Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, along with new colors Wild Green, Neptune Blue and Birch Sand. The Ram 1500 Big Horn has six wheel options, starting with a standard 18-inch wheel and moving through a collection of 18- and 20-inch wheel choices. The Ram is also offered in eleven exterior colors, including Bright White, Flame Red, Tank, Diamond Black Crystal, Forged Blue Metallic, Goldilocks, Granite Crystal Metallic, Hydro Blue, Molten Red, Serrano Green and Silver Zynith.
