# 2005-2026 Nissan Frontier Engines: What to Check Before You Buy

By Aaron Turpen

The second-generation Nissan Frontier debuted in North America for the 2005 model year. Known internally as the D40, it stayed in production through 2021. The third-generation Frontier arrived for 2022, but its engine had already debuted in the outgoing truck.

Three engines span these two generations. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 4.0-liter V-6 were offered through 2019. A new 3.8-liter V-6 and nine-speed automatic became standard for 2020, then carried into the redesigned 2022 truck.

## 2.5L QR25DE I4

The 2.5-liter QR25DE four-cylinder served as the base engine for 2005–2019 Frontiers, producing 152 hp. It is a basic work-truck choice rather than the pick for buyers seeking maximum towing capability.

Do not assume a problem reported in another Nissan with a QR25DE applies unchanged to the Frontier. Vehicle-specific components, production dates and service records matter.

For a high-mileage example, have a technician check for oil leaks, abnormal oil consumption, timing-chain noise and misfires. An inspection should identify the cause of a symptom rather than attributing it to engine design or age without evidence.

## 4.0L VQ40DE V6

The 4.0-liter VQ40DE V-6 produced 261 hp and was the stronger option for 2005–2019 Frontiers. Its long production run gives used buyers plenty of examples to compare, but condition varies widely.

[Recall 11V-592](<https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2011/RCAK-11V592-6276.pdf>) covered certain 2011–2012 Frontiers with an engine oil-cooler bolt that could break. The resulting oil leak could damage the engine. Check that the recall repair was completed.

Have a technician investigate abnormal timing-chain noise and review the truck’s repair history. Another important check on 2005–2010 automatic trucks is the radiator’s internal transmission cooler. [Nissan extended coverage](<https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2012/MC-10192051-9999.pdf>) after internal leaks could cause coolant contamination and transmission damage. That historical program was limited by age and mileage, so do not assume a truck is still covered.

## 3.8L VQ38DD V6

The 3.8-liter VQ38DD V-6 arrived for 2020 with 310 hp and a nine-speed automatic. It continued into the 2022 redesign and remains the engine for the 2026 Frontier. Towing and payload ratings depend on the truck’s configuration, not just horsepower.

Our [coverage of a VQ38 engine teardown](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2026/07/what-about-that-nissan-frontier-vq38-water-pump-big-fail-point-or-big-nothing/>) raised concerns about internal water-pump failure and repair access. An individual teardown does not establish a widespread defect or failure rate. Investigate unexplained coolant loss promptly and check the specific truck for open recalls.

## Which Engine Is Most Reliable In the Frontier?

My preference is the newer 3.8-liter V-6 for its power and the newer trucks available with it. That is an editorial recommendation, not a statistical finding that it is the most reliable Frontier engine. A well-maintained older truck can still be a sensible purchase, while a neglected newer one can be expensive.

## Should You Buy One?

The Frontier belongs on a midsize-truck shopping list, provided the individual truck passes inspection and suits the intended workload. On older automatic models, pay particular attention to radiator and transmission history. On any year, review maintenance records, confirm recall completion through [NHTSA’s VIN lookup](<https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls>) and budget for age-related repairs.
