# GMC Sierra Turn Signal Replacement Can Set You Back $1500?!

The cost to replace the turn signal (blinker) light on a current-generation Sierra can be over $1,500. That’s U.S. dollars. Blinker fluid not included.

This was what John Witchmann, a 2024 GMC Sierra [owner in Minnesota](<https://www.facebook.com/john.wichmann/posts/pfbid0MExiaa8wXVs7dpCfeoC52MofXz42s2qVHaRsmEcTMf77fHgZrA7KA8oDZeUnKtmql?__cft__%5B0%5D=AZbqBi8BIoqVo6cow2fSMR7Hwv36qOlqQI67ZNfPblqIAgJCuTya1II_FjYPsi6gnkisGYYxtLqKsiO0T1JjKj4yES0VrqZO-vVPByN5xFaDpB8zbMyUevr372fEn0wfCz71MZQCmNzhOOb28iMLfUTQTV4iNhnkLrfEjCWz0nYXQQ&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R>) found out when he took his truck in for a blinker fix. The issue wasn’t some unusually expensive problem, something broken deeper in the assembly, or any kind of neglected maintenance. The issue was LED assemblies and their distinct lack of cheap bulbs.

## LED Lights Versus Traditional Bulbs

Most new vehicles have LED lighting. They’re brighter, easier to control, and use less energy than do standard bulbs. They’re also more reliable, lighter in weight, and are generally considered able to last the life of the vehicle.

In today’s market, those are important things. There’s only so much power available in today’s computer-filled vehicles, so any amount saved can be used to run sensors and computers elsewhere. Reliably bright light from a lightweight source is a good thing.

Until it breaks, anyway.

## Why the LEDs on a Sierra Cost So Much

There are a couple of lighting options for this generation of the Sierra. The basic package is light bulbs in the traditional design. These cost, on average, about $15 each. Full replacement by a mechanic is about $100 with labor.

The next step is a set of LED lights. These come in two flavors: the standard upgrade, which is present on most trim levels of the truck. And then there’s the premium upgrade, which is what John has. The standard LEDs are just long-life LED bulb replacements for the base model’s lights. The premium upgrade is a full LED assembly. When that premium assembly breaks, the whole thing has to come off and be replaced as one unit.

The good news, though, is that the LED assembly is blinker fluid free, according to the invoice John received when his needed replacement. Small consolation, I’d bet.

## Costly Blinkers Are Just the Iceberg’s Tip

On the broader spectrum of things, it’s no wonder trucks cost more. More to buy, more to insure, and more to maintain. Parts like this are all over today’s pickups. When something breaks or an accident happens, things like $1,500 blinker assemblies add up fast.

John’s introduction to the cost of today’s trucks is just the latest. Every new truck owner finds this out eventually. And it’s usually a painful lesson. And it’s the way of things. As trucks get more expensive, so do the things associated with them.
