# GM Mandates Wild New 8-Speed Transmission Repair Procedure in Silverado, Sierra, More: Dealers Must Ask Permission?!

General Motors has been dealing with torque converter shudder in its eight-speed automatic transmissions for years. Apparently, the problem has now happened often enough that it needs paperwork to bypass dealer discretion. The problem has persisted in Silverado, Sierra, Colorado, and Canyon trucks.

A new GM preliminary information bulletin, PIP6127, changes how dealers handle torque converter replacement on certain truck models. The basic message is simple: don’t replace the torque converter until GM says you can. Up to this point, customers coming into dealerships with warranty complaints for torque shudder were usually just getting a torque converter replacement, no questions asked.

## The New PIP

The PIP bulletin, which are similar to technical service bulletins, covers 2019-2022 Silverado and Sierra 1500 models equipped with the 5.3L V8 or 2.7L Turbo, along with 2023-2026 versions using the 2.7L Turbo. It also covers every 2023-2026 Colorado and Canyon equipped with the 2.7L and eight-speed automatic.

For owners experiencing the familiar shudder, the first step is still a transmission-fluid flush. While most dealers were doing this as a first choice, it’s obvious that not all were verifying it correctly. GM wants dealers to verify that the procedure outlined in an earlier bulletin, 25-NA-148, has been completed before moving on to the next step. That step is now to drive the truck another 200 miles to see if the shudder returns.

If it does, things get more interesting.

## The Return of the Shudder

The truck must then be tested in Manual 7th gear. The dealer’s technician will drive the truck up to 7th gear and force it to stay there via manual shifting. If the shudder remains under those conditions, the dealer moves to the next step.

This step is not to replace the converter. Instead, it’s contacting GM’s Product Quality Center to get permission to replace the torque converter. In other words, a technician can’t simply diagnose a bad converter, order the part and get on with it. GM wants another set of eyes on the problem (well, the problem’s paperwork anyway) first.

## Why GM Added This Layer of Paperwork

And there’s a reason for the caution. GM’s eight-speed shudder history is complicated. Earlier service information specifically identified torque converter clutch shudder and prescribed fluid procedures, while later diagnostic information emphasized making sure the vibration actually originates with the torque converter rather than the engine, tires or driveline.

That’s an important distinction because a shudder felt through the seat doesn’t automatically mean the torque converter is dying. Modern powertrains have plenty of ways to make a vehicle vibrate without involving one of the expensive things underneath the floor. It looks a lot like GM got tired of just having every shudder written up as “torque converter” and an ensuing bill for warranty repairs.

The latest bulletin, then, isn’t exactly a new repair. It’s more of a tighter diagnostic gate. GM is essentially telling dealers to exhaust the relatively cheap solution before throwing a torque converter at the truck.

## What Owners Need To Know

For owners, it’s a lesson reinforcement: keep your paperwork. The lesson with warranties has always been paper trails. If you’ve already had the fluid flush performed, documentation could save you from starting the 200-mile diagnostic adventure all over again.

After years of GM eight-speed shudder complaints, the latest fix isn’t necessarily a new mechanical solution. It’s a new bureaucratic one. Because sometimes the transmission doesn’t just need a flush. It needs permission.
