# Review: 2026 Subaru Trailseeker: Quick, Rugged, Oddly Conflicted

The 2026 Subaru Trailseeker is one of the strangest new electric SUVs I have driven. Its exterior looks ready for dirt roads and mountain passes. Its cabin feels more like a futuristic Toyota EV. Then you press the accelerator and discover performance that seems better suited to a sports car.

After a week with the Trailseeker Touring, I came away impressed by its speed, useful cargo area, and straightforward controls. I also kept asking the same question: Why does a rugged Subaru need to be this quick?

## 2026 Subaru Trailseeker: Price and Range

The 2026 Subaru Trailseeker starts at $39,995 before destination. My Touring test vehicle, finished in Magnite Gray Metallic and equipped with the optional leather interior, carried a $48,305 sticker price including destination.

Subaru rates this Trailseeker Touring for 274 miles of driving range, while the base model is rated at 281 miles. Real-world range will depend on weather, speed, and driving habits. Based on the vehicle’s displayed range and efficiency during my week, I would plan around roughly 180 comfortable highway miles when wind, sustained speed, or winter temperatures enter the picture.

The Trailseeker uses a North American Charging Standard port and can access compatible Tesla Superchargers. Subaru says it can charge from 10% to 80% in about 28 minutes under ideal conditions. That is usable, although it does not put the Trailseeker among the fastest-charging EVs on the market.

## Design, Interior Space, and Comfort

The Trailseeker’s cabin has a large central screen and an unusual squared-off steering wheel (Photo by Tim Esterdahl)

The exterior leans into Subaru’s outdoors-focused image with substantial body cladding, roof rails, and an upright SUV shape. The wheels look sharp, although the Bridgestone tires fitted to the test vehicle appeared more road-oriented than trail-focused.

Inside, the Trailseeker takes a different approach. Blue and black upholstery, contrasting stitching, a large center display, and a squared-off steering wheel make the cabin feel more like a spaceship than a traditional Subaru.

The controls are easy to reach, visibility is good, and the surround-view camera system is useful. Steering-wheel paddles adjust regenerative braking. The unusual shifter twists for drive and reverse, while park is selected by pressing it.

The seats were comfortable during my week with the vehicle, and the panoramic roof brings plenty of light into the cabin. My main complaint is the low roof opening. I am 5 feet 7 inches tall and still had to duck while getting in. Taller shoppers should enter and exit several times during a test drive.

Road noise is more noticeable than it would be in a heavily insulated luxury EV, although it never made the Trailseeker unpleasant to drive.

## Cargo, Towing, and Off-Road Capability

The cargo floor is deep, and a 1,500-watt outlet adds camping and tailgating utility (Photo by Tim Esterdahl)

The cargo area is not especially tall, but it is deep and useful for luggage, camping gear and everyday hauling. My golf clubs did not fit as easily as I hoped, which illustrates the tradeoff created by the low roof.

Subaru rates the Trailseeker to tow up to 3,500 pounds. A 1,500-watt power outlet in the cargo area adds real utility for camping, tailgating, or powering equipment away from home.

The standard dual-function X-Mode system includes Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings, along with Grip Control and Downhill Assist Control. Downhill Assist manages acceleration and braking on steep descents so the driver can focus on steering.

That hardware and software fit the Trailseeker’s mission. The disconnect comes from how differently the vehicle behaves when the road opens up.

## Performance and Review Verdict

![Rear three-quarter view of the 2026 Subaru Trailseeker](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_8605.webp>)

The Trailseeker has more acceleration than its rugged shape suggests (Photo by Tim Esterdahl)

Subaru claims a 4.4-second 0-60 mph time, and the Trailseeker feels every bit that quick. Even in Normal mode, acceleration is immediate and forceful. Merging and passing require almost no planning.

The speed is entertaining, but it also defines my biggest question about this vehicle. A rugged electric Subaru does not need sports-car acceleration to fulfill its purpose. I would gladly trade some of that performance for a lower price, more range or a calmer power delivery.

The Trailseeker rides well over rough pavement, and the brakes handled a quick highway-speed test without drama. During my week with it, the efficiency display reached as high as 4.2 miles per kWh and commonly showed about 4 miles per kWh.

There is a lot to like about the 2026 Subaru Trailseeker. It is efficient, extremely quick, useful for light towing and cargo duty, and equipped with the all-weather features Subaru buyers expect.

The execution is less convincing at the $48,305 price of this Touring model. The low roof opening, road noise and unusual combination of rugged styling with sports-car acceleration make the overall package feel conflicted. Near its base price, the Trailseeker is easier to understand. At nearly $50,000, the compromises become harder to overlook.

The Trailseeker is cool, capable and memorable. I am just not convinced that Subaru prioritized the things most buyers need from a rugged electric SUV.
