Maybe. But after driving the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT on-road, off-road and, yes, through a few jumps, there is a method to the madness. Ram did not just bring the TRX back. It brought it back louder, stronger, more luxurious and officially wearing the SRT badge. The result is a truck that feels like equal parts desert racer, luxury pickup and Texas sports car. ## The TRX is back, and now it is officially SRT ![2027 ram 1500 trx srt 9]() No longer just an “SRT at heart” the 2027 Ram TRX is the performance sub-brand’s halo vehicle (Photo by Cory Fourniquet) Ram says the TRX was always SRT at heart, but now it is official. With the relaunch of SRT to the public, this 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT becomes the brand’s halo truck. Visually, Ram made sure this version stands out. Our tester wore Serrano Green Metallic paint, which worked well with the black accents and the new flame red details. The grille gets a flame red outlined Ram badge, and the tow hooks front and rear are also finished in flame red. There is also a new SRT badge, revised TRX badging, and a front clip brought more in line with the rest of the Ram 1500 family. The headlights are new, the wide fenders remain, and the truck still has that huge, unmistakable stance. ## The 777-horsepower HEMI is the whole point ![2027 ram 1500 trx srt 18]() New internals helped boost the power from 702 horsepower to the 777 mark the CEO asked for (Photo by Cory Fourniquet) Under the hood is the 6.2L supercharged HEMI V8 making 777 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque. That is the headline, and Ram knows it. This is not just a carryover Hellcat engine with a bigger number slapped on the brochure. Ram says the engine gets a new intake system, a new air filter, updated valvetrain internals and other changes to help it reach that 777-horsepower figure. Airflow matters here, too. The functional Ram Airflow hood feeds air toward the high-flow intake, and the grille is also designed to help pull in additional air to keep things cool. Ram says this improved breathing is part of how it unlocked the extra power. Power goes through the TorqueFlite 8HP95 8-speed automatic transmission and into a BorgWarner 48-13 full-time active transfer case. Unlike the [Ford F-150 Raptor R](), there is no 2WD burnout mode here. Power goes exclusively to all four wheels. ## Jumping the TRX is where things get wild ![2027 ram 1500 trx srt 86]() Yes, I had the opportunity to jump the TRX (Photo by Cory Fourniquet) Before driving the course myself, I rode shotgun with Toon Tan from SRT High Performance Off-Road Vehicle Development for Ram trucks. He walked me through the setup and explained how the truck is designed to handle hard off-road driving, including jumps. Here is the wild part: When you are jumping the truck wide open, Ram says you can stay in the throttle. The engine knows to cut torque so it does not overspeed. The transmission holds its gear so it is ready when you land. The transfer case can open the clutch to help prevent driveline shock when the truck touches back down. That is not normal pickup truck behavior. To soften the landing, the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT uses second-generation Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive performance shocks and Ram Active Terrain Dynamics. It has 13 inches of front wheel travel and 14 inches of rear wheel travel, and despite the sound on the video, the landings felt shockingly smooth for something this large. [Embedded video]() Being a passenger was one thing. Driving it myself was another. The course required commitment, especially on the second jump, where the instruction was to stay on the throttle until the truck landed. That goes against every natural instinct, but the truck (and I) handled it. ## It is still a luxury truck inside ![2027 ram 1500 trx srt 57]() The 2027 TRX gets all the luxuries inside as standard (Photo by Cory Fourniquet) The TRX SRT may be an off-road monster, but Ram also filled the cabin with premium materials and tech. Inside, there is leather, suede, real carbon fiber, and a proper mechanical gear selector for the 8-speed automatic transmission. All TRX models come with heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats with two-person memory, a leather flat-bottom steering wheel, a 12-inch digital driver display, and a 14.5-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen. Ram also fitted a Harman Kardon 19-speaker audio system with a 10-inch subwoofer. There is a head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a carbon-fiber cover over the upper glove box instead of the passenger screen found in some other Ram models. That last detail is a win. This truck does not need another screen. ## The back seat is not an afterthought ![2027 ram 1500 trx srt 61]() Back seat passengers may rethink their life decisions if you plan to jump the TRX with people in the back (Photo by Cory Fourniquet) One thing Ram continues to do well is rear-seat comfort, and the TRX SRT is no exception. The rear seat is spacious, and it has a 60/40 split-folding reclining setup. There are grab handles to help climb inside, Ram Bin storage boxes in the floor, and heated and ventilated, reclining second-row seats. That is a lot of comfort for a truck that can also launch itself into the air. Of course, riding in the back with the wrong driver might be an adventure. But at least the passengers will be comfortable while questioning their life choices. ## On-road, the suspension is the secret weapon ![2027 ram 1500 trx srt 37]() Everything that makes the TRX great off-road, also translates on-road (Photo by Cory Fourniquet) Everything that makes the TRX SRT work off-road also makes it surprisingly good on the road. The suspension tuning is the star. On broken Michigan back roads, parking lot speed bumps and rough pavement, the TRX simply eats up the road. It does not crash over bumps or feel unsettled the way you might expect from a truck this wide, this tall and this heavy. With 777 horsepower available, it is also quick. Very quick. Using launch control, the truck recorded a 0-60 mph run of 4.25 seconds in less-than-perfect conditions. Ram claims a quicker 3.5-second time, and with better conditions, that number is probably correct. The bigger issue is sound. This truck is loud enough to let everyone nearby know exactly what you are doing. Running a launch test on unfamiliar roads makes you very aware of that fact. ## Final thoughts: Ram is completely mental, and we are here for it ![2027 ram 1500 trx srt 48]() Sign me up for more seat time in the TRX, please (Photo by Cory Fourniquet) After a day with the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT, the conclusion is simple: Ram did its homework. It took what made the original TRX special and added more power, more tech, more standard luxury, and an official SRT badge. The truck is ridiculous, but it is not sloppy. It feels engineered for the madness. The price is also ridiculous. Our tester came in at $106,570 including destination. That is a lot of money for a pickup truck, no matter how much horsepower it has. But this is not a normal pickup truck. It is a 777-horsepower, supercharged, luxury off-road truck that can jump, launch, cruise and make every gas station stop feel like a small financial decision. Ram may be completely mental for building this thing. Good.
