By Tim Esterdahl Published: 2024-03-15T19:53:43+00:00 Updated: 2025-07-23T15:10:57+00:00 ![Featured image]() A recent study reveals used truck prices are finally dropping, meaning you might find a bargain or you might have lost money. ## **Used truck prices dropping** Before I get into this study, it is important to realize there are two ways of looking at this data. On the one hand, if you are looking for a bargain, finding a used truck on the list could save you thousands. However, if you own one of these trucks already, you better hold onto it for a while. Its resale value just got smacked around like a piñata at a kid’s party. The [iSeeCars.com study]() looked at more than 1.8 million 1- to 5-year-old used cars sold in February 2023 and 2024. According to the study: “By comparing the average prices of cars by segment, brand and model, the analysis shows a general softening of used car prices overall.” It looks like inflation hasn’t impacted used truck prices as one would expect. The list of used truck prices shows older trucks like the [Ram 1500 Classic](), Ford Ranger, Ram 1500 and [Honda Ridgeline]() lead the way in the largest price decreases year over year. For several of those trucks, this can be explained with new models replacing them like in the case of the [2025 Ram 1500]() and [2024 Ford Ranger](). When a new model is coming out, leftover new trucks see price cuts, which leads to the used truck market seeing a further reduction in price. (Screenshot courtesy of iSeeCars.com) Interestingly, the Toyota Tacoma only has an $873 decrease year-over-year — even with a new [2024 Toyota Tacoma]() now reaching dealers. Also, surprising is the [Nissan Titan]() and Titan XD, which were discontinued last year. I would have expected prices to be above average with no new truck and limited inventory of used trucks. The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon used truck prices actually increased year over year, and this might reflect the fact the newer [2023 Chevy Colorado]() and [2023 GMC Canyon]() have been on sale for a while now. It doesn’t look like the new model pushed down used truck pricing too badly. The [Nissan Frontier]() has the largest year-over-year increase in used truck prices, and this isn’t too surprising since the truck was refreshed in 2022 and has a naturally aspirated engine — in other words no turbochargers. I’ve seen a lot of consumer pushback to turbocharged engines due to fears over replacement costs. ## **The bottom line** When you are shopping for a used truck, or looking to reduce the [costs of keeping an old car](), studies like this one can be helpful in your decision making.
