Reporter Larry Vellequette said this product is under discussion but hasn’t been approved yet. So, what would a Corolla-based compact pickup truck look like? And when would we see it? We don’t have any clear answers, but we have speculations of our own. ## **A Toyota Corolla pickup?** One thing is for sure, this Toyota Corolla pickup would be aimed squarely at the [Ford Maverick]() and [Hyundai Santa Cruz](). We’d expect it to be similar in size to the [Corolla Cross]() compact crossover and built on the same GA-C platform. Therefore, we’d also expect to get the gas-only 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine as well as the hybrid variant. We’d also assume that Toyota would cash in on the Corolla name in some way, but we don’t know if they would simply call it the Toyota Corolla pickup, or if they’d come up with some pithy contraction like Coroll-up or Corolla Ute. What remains to be seen is if the styling would be more rugged – like the Maverick – or more urban chic – like the Santa Cruz. ## **When might we see it?** According to the Auto News report, we wouldn’t see it until 2027, earliest. That would coincide with the next-generation of the Corolla Cross, which came out for the 2020 model year. The report also speculates that it would be built in the Mississippi plant that builds the Corolla – not the Alabama one that builds the Corolla Cross. ## **The bottom line** Ford can’t seem to build enough Mavericks, and the Santa Cruz is steadily gaining popularity. We’ve said repeatedly that we’re surprised no other automaker is cashing in on the compact truck trend. We’ve heard rumors about [Ram]() and [Nissan]() compact trucks, but there have been no confirmations. So, will Toyota be the next one to build a compact truck? We don’t know, but we think they should. How about you?
