New sport truck? A recent report suggests a new Ford F-150 Lobo might bring this idea back. ## **Ford F-150 Lobo?** The report from [TheDrive.com]() says this new version of the F-150 will be offered with a lowered suspension with “sinister and aggressive” styling. It could be introduced next month when a new Ford F-150 makes its debut during the [North American International Auto Show]() on September 13 and 14, 2023. Currently, the Ford F-150 is known as the Ford Lobo in Mexico. Lobo translates into “wolf” in Spanish. It has been sold there since the 1990s. This speculation on it coming to the U.S. is based on Ford filing a patent to protect the name “F-150 Lobo” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Back to the speculation. It would be a trim level of the F-150 much like the popular Tremor version of the truck. And it would harken back to the mid-1990s when the [Ford F-150 SVT Lightning]() was around. That Lightning, not the electric one, had a 7.4 second 0-60 time and a top speed of 110 miles per hour. It was also offered in a regular cab, short bed which is very unlikely to return due to CAFE emissions standards. Powertrains would likely be a high-output 3.5-liter V-6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission like found in the Ford Raptor. While fans would love to see the supercharged V-8 from the Ford Raptor R, my concern would be the price point. I also think it will be offered in 2WD only to cut weight and make it quicker off the line. The Drive’s Caleb Jacobs, thinks otherwise and says it will be 4WD since most truck buyers want that. Then there is the question on interior and price point. Jacobs suggests this could be a version similar to the [Ford F-150 Rattler](). The Rattler is a barebones, for today’s market, 4WD truck with cloth seats, skid plates and a rear locker. It is based on the entry-level XL trim. Ford also offers an off-road focused [F-250 XL Super Duty]() with skid plates, bigger tires and a rear locker for work customers. This trend leads me to think a Ford F-150 Lobo could be an XL version of the truck, 2WD only, crew cab only and 5-foot, 6-inch bed with the high-output 3.5-liter V-6 coming in around $55,000. ## **The bottom line** More variants of the popular Ford F-150 are a good thing for consumers looking to customize their truck to their needs. Plus, it’s fun to do smokey burnouts in a full-size truck!
