In [this video]() Publisher Tim Esterdahl visits with a ASE Master Mechanic to install a [PPE Oil Pan](), a transmission fluid bypass valve and check the transmission fluid in his 2023 Chevy Silverado 3.0L Duramax diesel truck. This truck is known for excessive oil usage, so much so that General Motors has even published a warning that you may experience more oil usage than you’d expect. While replacing it isn’t a must-do, it’s something Esterdahl wanted to do on his personal truck, and having some expert mechanic friends to help made the job a whole lot easier. In fact, this is something you probably don’t want to do yourself unless you have all the right tools and a good deal patience. ## Chevy Silverado 3.0L Duramax diesel oil pan replacement video Once the truck is up on the lift, and the oil is drained, Esterdahl and the mechanics start working to remove the 23 hex-drive bolts that hold the oil pan in place. To get to some of them they will need to drop the front differential a little and move a few other items out of the way, but we don’t see them removing things all together, just loosening a little. Esterdahl compares the two oil pans and the guys get to work applying a new silicone seal and installing the new oil pan from PPE which holds 2 more quarts of oil than the OEM pan. They will tighten the bolts using a cross pattern and where a torque wrench can’t be used due to the tight fit they will rely on this experienced mechanic’s judgement to reach the recommended 8-10 pound-feet of torque.
