By Jill Ciminillo Published: 2023-01-12T21:34:19+00:00 Updated: 2025-07-23T15:12:30+00:00 ![Featured image]() When the Ram Revolution BEV Concept was revealed last week, there were a lot of fantastical features and gadgets showcased. But the one thing we didn’t hear anything about: A gas-powered range extender. We’ve heard rumors for a year that this new electric truck would have one, but the reveal made no mention of it. Then again, the reveal was very mum on details of any kind. ## **Where did the Ram Revolution range extender rumor start?** At the 2022 Chicago Auto Show, [EV Pulse did an exclusive interview]() with Mike Koval Jr., Ram Trucks CEO. In that sit down, Koval said there would be a “class shattering” range extender version of the Ram electric truck. But, um, if you were going to introduce something this revolutionary on a truck, wouldn’t you at least mention it on the concept? We’ve seen range extenders previously on electric cars like the BMW i3 and the Chevrolet Volt (not Bolt). This is where they take an electric vehicle, add a gas-powered motor to charge the battery. Thus, you could see an electric vehicle with 300 miles of range conceivably get half again as much range [driving on the highway](). ## **Why a range extender is a good idea** Our team has had several problems taking EVs on road trips – [especially in cold weather](). In rural Nebraska – and even between Chicago and Indianapolis on a major thoroughfare – EV stations are [hard to find and relatively subpar]() when you get there. So, imagine having 300 miles of electric range, and then getting a boost of another 100 to 150 miles with a range extender. It makes road trips more doable as well as more cost-effective. Plus, if you’re towing long distance, you wouldn’t have to [stop every 100 miles to charge](). ## **The bottom line** Is the Ram Revolution BEV getting a range extender? We don’t know. Koval seemed to think it would get one at one back in February of 2022, but we haven’t heard any confirmation – or real discussion of it – since. So, at this point it really is just a rumor. But, hey, Ram, if you really want to be revolutionary, IMHO a range extender would be a bang-up idea. What do you think?
