The news first reported by [CNBC.com]() on Friday, March 25, 2022, states the plants production halt is due to the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage. This facility builds the highly profitable Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. ### **What do the Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra delays means for buyers?** This halt in production from April 4 – 11 is further bad news for new truck buyers. There is already a massive shortage of new trucks on dealer lots, and restricting their production is only gone to make matters worse. It also comes at an extremely bad time with the refreshed versions of both trucks starting to be built. The refreshed [2022 Chevy Silverado]() and [2022 GMC Sierra]() trucks will include a new, much sharper interior dash, new front fascia and a new rear fascia (grille and bumper) along with new technology like the [Super Cruise system in higher trim GMC Sierra trucks]() among other changes — like a [higher price tag](). These changes should make the truck much more competitive for prospective buyers IF you can get one or find trucks to compare. There should also be some concerns over increased dealer markups since demand is so high at the moment. GM, like other manufacturers, has been warning dealers against this practice for years, yet it still happens. ### **When will semiconductor shortage end?** The stark reality is this: There is no end in sight for the semiconductor issue. Currently, there are U.S. plants being built to increase supply, yet demand will continue to outpace supply for one simple reason — electric vehicles. EVs use significantly more semiconductors than non-EVs — in [a ratio of 2 to 1 and even 3 to 1 for some Tesla vehicles](). This means the groundbreaking last week of the [Cadillac Lyric production]() and the ramping up of production for the GMC Hummer EV will take even more chips from full-size trucks. GM has historically chosen to [push out trucks with less features]() planning to [add them back in]() the future. Now it looks halting production is the next step in its plan to meet consumer demand. ### **The bottom line on Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra delays** The unfortunate reality is if you are looking for a new truck these days, it is going to be tough going. You are either going to have been really lucky or patient — or just flat out give up. There really isn’t a good option. And forget about incentives or cash on the hood to get you to buy.
