The Ford Edge is a vehicle that sold more than 100,000 units in 2021 (108,886 to be specific). And while that number shows a drop of 21% year over year, that is a significant revenue stream. So it seems curious that Ford Motor Co. plans to discontinue the midsize SUV after the 2023 model year, according to a [story by Ford Authority](<https://fordauthority.com/2022/01/ford-edge-discontinued-after-2023-model-year-in-north-america/>).

What this means for the Lincoln Nautilus, which shares the Edge’s platform, is uncertain, but it’s a safe assumption that the low-selling Lincoln would also be discontinued. According to Ford Authority, the Edge and Nautilus would still be manufactured for the Chinese market where both vehicles are independently made.

### What’s new for the 2022 Ford Edge?

After some major changes in the 2021 model year for the Edge including some impressive [new tech](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2020/10/major-tech-updates-big-bucks-right-not-on-2021-ford-edge/>), the 2022 Edge will feature just a handful of changes. The most significant is making all-wheel drive (AWD) standard and the only option, which means front-wheel drive (FWD) is no longer available. As such, you’ll see about a $2k increase to the MSRP.

Ford also added the Black Appearance Package, and there will be the addition of the Atlas Blue exterior color too.

There had been talk of a redesign happening for the Edge around 2023, but clearly that’s no longer happening for the U.S. market.

### Where will Ford Edge customers turn?

Ford won’t want to lose 100k customers. So, where does the automaker expect these customers to turn within the Ford product line? That’s the million dollar question. The Explorer will be the likely recipient with its lower base price, but for those who don’t want something bigger, perhaps we’ll see some of those numbers translate into Bronco Sport, Bronco or even Maverick sales. Obviously these are starkly different vehicles, but there are a variety of new vehicle options for Blue Oval fans these days.

Plus, don’t forget, Ford announced the [Timberline trim of the Explorer](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/05/2021-ford-explorer-timberline-the-family-suv-just-got-a-whole-lot-tougher/>), which will drive excitement to that SUV.

### The bottom line on the Ford Edge

Ford took heat when it announced it was getting rid of its car line (except for the Mustang) and were focusing on trucks and SUVs. So, getting rid of an SUV that sells 100,000 units seems curious to me. If it were a less-than-stellar vehicle, such as the EcoSport, it might make sense, but the Edge still seemed viable. Therefore, we have to wonder what Ford has up its sleeve? TBD.
